Why Breakfast Is Important Breakfast is one of the most important meals of any day. Both Health Canada and the Canadian Food Guide recommend it for both genders and any age. Breakfast is a meal that will impact you throughout the day in how you act, feel and continue to eat. Breakfast is helpful in many ways, one of them being with your mental health. Breakfast is also a very important meal when looking into weight-loss and weigh management. To benefit the body, a proper breakfast must be eaten. Breakfast is a very essential meal for many people, and had many benefits to everyone. Breakfast in many ways can impact your mental health. “The effects of a skipped breakfast are short attention span, lack of alertness, longer reaction time…[and] decreased work productivity,” states saying that by eating breakfast it can provide the opposite. Breakfast recharges the mind after sleeping so that it can awake and focus on the day ahead. It allows the mind to focus because it stimulates everything that has been asleep during the night and lets the body perform its best. Studies show that breakfast allows the mind to have a longer attention span because food is not a concern. When breakfast is not eaten, the mind and body are both craving energy that can be supplied by eating, causing the mind not to fully focus on tasks being done. Mental health improvement is just one of the benefits that a healthy breakfast can have. Along with mental health, breakfast can also affect a person’s weight loss and weight management. According to many studies, “skipping breakfast can actually make weight control more difficult. Breakfast skippers tend to eat more food than usual at the next meal or nibble on high-calorie snacks to stave off hunger,”.     A widespread component of the breakfast debate is the possibility of a link between skipping the early-morning meal and gaining weight or losing weight. However, no such link has actually been proven. There have been numerous studies that have researched the correlation. One study published in the Journal of American Dietetic Association noted that while “breakfast eaters generally consumed more daily calories” and “were less likely to be overweight”, a limited number of their studies could palpably “associate breakfast skipping with overweight” (Rampersaud et al. 2005). Another study done by Emily J. Dhurandhar et al found that “contrary to widely espoused views [eating or skipping breakfast] had no discernable effect on weight loss in free-living adults who were attempting to lose weight” (Dhurandhar et al. 2014). Many believe in this correlation, and thus consider eating breakfast to be the most important meal of the day in terms of assuring weight loss. However, studies have not proven these theories, and correlation does not equate to causation. Just because an individual skips breakfast, does not guarantee they will eat more throughout the day and gain weight.
