“In today’s competitive retail environment, the methods have changed for capturing the consumers’ awareness of your brand’’ This quote was said by Marshal Cohen who states himself that discrimination plays a big role in the business world. In today’s society you need to have the right look. Whether you have the right body type or the right face for the job you should be able to get a job no matter what you look like.…
Another argument Cohen brings up is that retailers hire based on looks because it is smart and necessary. In the article “Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination” by Steven Green gives a great example about Elizabeth Nill. She walks into Abercrombie stores and almost every time managers walk up to her and offer her a job. This proves that retailers hire only attractive people. This is discrimination because Abercrombie is only hiring white, attractive people. This leaves them vulnerable for criticism from the public.…
Jim is shorter than Kevin, and Lonna is less attractive than Merilyn. Research shows that compared with taller men and more attractive individuals, Jim will likely make less income and Lonna will receive poorer performance reviews and a lower salary. Appearance-based discrimination has been barred by…
In order to keep discrimination out of the workplace, it is necessary to enforce the law on both the employer and employees. Everyone deserves equal rights. Even though some types of discrimination goes unnoticed, it should still be brought up and addresses. No employer should judge someone because of how they look, how their name is spelt, and how they sound when they speak. Women should not be denied equal rights, when it comes down to applying for the same job a man is trying to get.…
“According to TNS Research Surveys, 68 percent of women surveyed believe gender discrimination exist in the workplace. Federal law protects women and other minorities from discrimination in the workplace. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 ended the practice of paying men more than women when performing the same jobs and duties. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act extended this protection to other minorities. Despite these protections, many women still feel gender-based discrimination is a problem in some businesses” (Gluck). Regardless of the amount of attention discrimination of forms may receive and the progress made towards equal rights for all individuals in the work place, there is evidence that discrimination is still not a thing of the past just yet.…
Through my reading and interpretation of this essay, I’ve come to realize that there will always be discrimination because of how a person looks, acts, and presents themselves, but I don’t think there should be a reason for individuals to get so distraught over the issue. Although looks and physical appearance shouldn’t be something one person should judge another over, I firmly believe there are certain standards for particular situations, and we, as people, should come to understand that. When Rhode brought forward the issue with the waitress being denied a larger uniform due to health issues, I felt sorry for her, almost to the point of pity. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the casino, just like any other business, had a certain image to uphold, and they had a certain standard for the way their employees should look and portray themselves. And even though she had a legitimate reason why she gained some weight, the waitress signed a contract with the casino which required her to keep an “hourglass figure” (247).…
The people of the world today argue about discrimination all the time, and is not just among races or ethnic groups, it is among different gender, religions, preferences in partners , and different economic qualities. However, all of these words are example of discrimination, but in opinion color of skin is one of the huge problem. In the workplace there is a great deal of evidence that shows racial and gender discrimination still are apart of American workplace. After reading the article ‘Because Your’re Black’ by Nathan Place and Erin Durkin found out Jamilah DaCosta, a 25 years old girl who tried to get a job at bakery, but the owner of bakery didn't hire her and she said, “ I can't hire you because you are black and black workers in the…
Section 703. Unlawful Employment Practices. (a) It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer- to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges or employment, because of such individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. In my opinion if you qualify for the job based the requirement of the job and you are a good candidate you should be given a chance. If any employer hires based on what they feel personally about the candidate or how they look they would be breaking the law. I feel everyone should be given an equal opportunity.…
In the book “The Working Poor: Invisible in America” the author David K. Shipler discusses barriers and biases toward employability an example would be the appearance of Caroline in chapter 2. People are discriminated against because of their handicaps they couldn’t prevent and that keeps them from being hired or promoted even if they are hard workers.…
There is no law saying that companies cannot hire based on looks, but it seems unfair because people are not always attractive to certain people. Though attractive people have a better chance of influencing employers. “Attractiveness has been found to influence employers’ judgments about job applicants. Studies have consistently found that we tend to have an unconscious attractiveness bias in the workplace and that physical attractiveness impacts decisions related to employment including hiring, promotions, and compensation.” (A. (n.d.). ERC) Though I still believe that people should be only hired on their skills and personality for the job because those are more important characteristics for the job.…
Here’s something to think about. Have you ever been competing for something such as a job and wondered what made you lose to your competitor? Your first instinct would probably be that they have more intelligence or are more experienced and knowledgeable but what it that wasn’t the reason? Maybe, it had nothing to do with any of that. Maybe it had to do with your sex orientation or color of your skin, or even the quality of your clothes. In our society, appearance has always been taken into affect when it comes to making decisions. Although it may be unfair, the way you look can either increase or decrease your chances or succeeding or failing in this world. In fact, appearance has been crucial for years now and will most likely continue into the future. In the poem, “Pet Fly” by Walter Mosley, there are many examples of how ones appearance truly affects them. In this poem, there are four particular employees who work at the same office but on different floor levels based on their appearances: Rufus Coombs, Mr. Averill, Ernie, and Mona Donelli.…
Hiring based on looks is discriminating in the way that people cant change who they are and how they look. Those people who didn’t “fit the standards” would be hurt emotionally. They would have self-esteem issues because the are constantly being turned down from a job because they “aren’t pretty enough”. People who have the looks would be accepted even if they didn’t have the skill to do the job. They are technically being paid to, as they say, stand around and look pretty.…
In today's society it is very common that people are discriminated against based on their looks. It is a serious problem in job situations. It matters is you are skinny or fat, or short or tall and it shouldn't.…
Hiring by looks can cause numerous amounts of issues, both at the governmental level and the emotional level. As Olophius Perry stated in the article, Going for the Look but Risking Discrimination, “If you’re hiring by looks, then you can run into problems of race discrimination, national origin discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination, and even disability discrimination.”(Greenhouse 1). Our country specifically was founded on equality and equal opportunity for all. When businesses start hiring based on looks and/or gender, our country’s morals begin to slip slowly through Uncle Sam’s fingers. Discrimination of any sort may also cause a person great emotional damage. Perhaps a hard working, well-kept, person was turned away from a job because of his or her un-attractive face, that person could be so hurt that they commit suicide; while one person gets richer because of this life changing decision they made, another person’s sanity is lost. This type of discrimination is not worth the pain and suffering of one human being in return for fame and money.…
Cohen argues that there is a good reason to gain this edge by hiring solely on looks rather than ability, and I couldn't agree more with Cohen's standpoint, because we are in a very competitive age, and methods such as using good looking people simply works. People shouldn't look at it as anymore that just a business gaining an edge.…
