Who Was Lincoln The Best President

Lincoln was said by many to be the most accomplished and best president to date. He abolished slavery, won the civil war, and helped America become what it has come today. Was he really the greatest president? Many of our presidents have done something great that has helped us shape America to what we are now. President Lincoln had lied directly to our states in order to become president. Nobody knew his real purpose of abolishing slavery until the Union's weakest moment. He is clearly not the greatest president. He wasn't a part of the centralized government that he created, he captured Maryland, and he was a socialist. First, Lincoln prevented free voting to allow for the states to decide their own fate. One could easily argue that Lincoln began an entire war, not over slavery, but over state's rights. He’s obviously believes in high taxes as shown after 1861 when he passed huge tariffs on the entirety of the South. These taxes effected those of every walk of life and began to break the back of the “Confederate” economy. Then again, high taxes made him an American liberal, not a socialist. Lincoln was one of the first real proponents of the progressive income tax, which many at the time said was unfair to tax the rich just for being rich. Lincoln did not view it as such; he viewed it as a means to pay for his war against state’s rights. Again, this still makes him a modern, American liberal. His view on labor compiled with his penchant for taxation is what makes him a socialist. Lincoln had a lot to do with the labor movements of the 1800's.
