American fiction writer. "In the short story "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber",

Wilson found out about all of his prior pranks. Like, all of them, he ever pulled on anybody that was witnessed by Charles. It was just a typical day, but by the third period of the day, Mason was invited into Mr. Robert’s office. When he got inside, the first thing that he noticed was the little snitch. He was sitting in one of the two antique empire chairs in front of the principal’s desk. He took the empty seat to the left of him. Jones dared not to give him the darkest, evil stare ever, even though he was so tempted to do it, he sensed Wiseman staring at him, he would never want to lock eyes with…

In Hemingway’s short story, there are several types of conflict portrayed by the main character Francis Macomber. The initial conflict is Macomber with himself, suggesting an internal conflict. This is shown as Macomber is disappointed with himself for acting cowardly on his first encounter with a lion. Macomber says to Wilson, “I can’t thank you for what you did”, and admits that he “bolted like a rabbit.” His words suggest Macomber was afraid, and needed to be saved by Wilson. The next conflict in the story is Macomber’s conflict with the wild. This is portrayed as Macomber struggles with his fear of wild animals and his attempt to overcome those fears. Another conflict is the obvious conflict Macomber has with Robert Wilson. In addition to feeling inadequate against Wilson’s many talents in the wild, there is also the fact Wilson beds Macomber’s wife. Lastly, there is the conflict Macomber has with his wife. This is portrayed throughout the story but becomes more relevant when Macomber’s wife sleeps with Wilson. Macomber says, “You said if we made this trip there…

“Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong, and, if needs be, taken by the strong” (Connell 27). Rainsford did play the “game” in Richard Connell’s short story, proving that only the strongest survive. Who knew one fall could lead to so much misfortune. From the minute he fell off his yacht, Rainsford found himself in the biggest challenge of his life. In this short story, you learn that humans are not the only ones who have feelings, but that animals have feelings too. What most readers get out of this story is to be ready for anything that comes your way. At first he was on a yacht smoking a cigar to running for his life on an island.…

In “An Elephant Crackup?”, Charles Siebert partly attributes the belligerence of the recent generations of elephants, the animals considered to be among the most intelligently advanced, to the lack of a matriarch, a powerful female figure. He takes an example of the case of the last elephant survivors at Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the elderly female elephant was the one who “gathered the survivors together from their various hideouts”, “led them back out as one group”, and “held the group together [as] the population all the while slowly beginning to rebound” (Siebert 358). The idea that the sustainability of the group is dependent on its leading female is rather surprising, in the sense that in the wilderness, where the determination of roles among the members of the herds is largely, or even solely, influenced by physical ability, it would be more logical that the males are in control. Surprisingly, there are several researches that prove the opposite, that despite lacking physical advantage, female leaders are vital to the behavior and existence of the group itself. This phenomenon is not only interesting, but also very useful and fundamental to the effort of improving the aggression of the elephants, and through that, the relationship between elephants and humans. Also, there are certain ways that the “political” and social order of the matriarchal societies in elephant can be held accountable for the sake of this process.…

In "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” by Ernest Hemingway, a rich man with his wife on an African safari shows himself a coward when he runs from a wounded lion, to the disgust of both his safari guide, Robert Wilson and his wife. Hemingway uses imagery, representation and the narrative voice to reveal the importance of demands placed by heteronormative masculinity. Hemingway contrasts physical descriptions, weapons used and character perspectives to establish the identity of a masculine man.…
