After reading both introductions from Dr.Loewen’s Lies My Teacher Told Me and Dr. Schweikart’s 48 Liberal Lies About American History I would have to agree with Dr.Loewen. Schweikart made accusations that facts, true facts, were missing from our textbooks and that the facts that are being placed in our textbooks are unimportant, and have nothing to do with how America’s future will look. Whereas Lowen made the point, that I fully believe, that “These books are huge”(Loewen 3). I mean don’t get me wrong I love reading. I enjoy reading about our nation’s history. I just enjoy reading about it without all the banners and highlighted words. I agree with Loewen, these textbooks are making learning about history boring.…

The introductory paragraph of the novel is of great significance and whilst the reader doesn’t realise this at the time, already Goldsworthy is in our heads making us wonder about this character, the Maestro, Eduard Keller. Goldsworthy uses may facets of Keller as a point of intrigue in this novel, straight away Keller is abnormal, he doesn’t belong in Darwin, which is described as a “city of booze, blow, and blasphemy.” (p.9) by Dr Crabbe. Early in the novel, Keller and Paul simply do not get along, and through Paul’s narrating, we (the reader) think of the Maestro in a negative manner as well. Paul’s arrogance blinds him to Keller’s painful history. Paul’s self-absorption is emphasised by categorising Keller as a ‘Nazi’, despite knowing ‘almost nothing about him’. This is the older Paul’s greatest regret, as it inhibited young Paul’s relationship with Keller. On hearing Keller’s accent, Paul immediately characterises Keller as a Nazi– a judgement made easy by Keller’s authoritarian teaching regime. Goldsworthy uses the development of Keller to great effect as his development really shapes the novel and entices the reader. Keller is an isolated figure, we only hear of his interaction with the Crabbe’s, eventually Paul himself starts to wonder what lies beyond the white suit, the missing finger, the collection of newspaper articles, the solitude and this is when the story really starts to turn. Goldsworthy drops hints throughout that novel which can be fully appreciated when re-reading it. Paul asks questions about Vienna due to his…

One may believe that this story is very beneficial because it shows you that you need to take every experience and really appreciate the moment because there might not ever be another one like this. While reading through the essay the first time, trying to find his main points were difficult. His stories and his examples made it much easier to understand where exactly he was going. His essay was structured very well, although being frustrated due to not finding his main ideas the first time reading this essay, confusion about where he was headed never occurred. Agreement with his statements were constantly occurring while reading. Every point or example that he provided was backed up with evidence. Something that stood out to this reader was his example of the dogfish. This example talked about how there is a relationship that is between a dogfish and Shakespeare sonnet. A student that is desired to have either of these will have difficulty retrieving the creature itself from an educational package. This stood out because one may have never thought of putting these two subjects in the same sentence. This essay was one that stood out because it made one think logically throughout the whole…
