Who Is Mr. Van Daan
Imagine if you were to go into hiding with people that you don’t know about and don’t know anything about their character. A Jewish girl named, Anne Frank, had to go through that experience during World War 2. Anne and her family, the Franks, were Jewish and had to go into hiding after Anne’s sister, Margot, received a letter to a concentration camp. The Franks hid above Mr. Frank’s work office with help from friends. With them, are the Van Daans, Mrs. Van Daan is a person that shows off, Mr. Van Daan is a selfish person and doesn’t care about anything else but himself and food. The last person with the Franks is Mr. Dussel, a dentist, he is a very shy but sometimes gets into his feelings that cause him to be mad at anyone who annoys him. There …show more content…
For example, on Hanukkah, there was a noise downstairs in the office. When everybody has panicking, Peter, the Van Daan’s son, accidently knocks down a lap and a chair that made a big “bang” downstairs. This made everyone worried and scared, but Mr. Frank had the courage to go downstairs and see what or who was down there. It had happened to be a thief that had been there and ran away when it heard the noise from upstairs. When everyone in the residence was scared and panicking, Mr. Frank was the only one that was calm and went to see who it was …show more content…
An example of this is when Mr. Frank and his family barely moved in, Mr. Frank showed compassion towards the Van Daans by offering them a place to stay. Mr. Frank did the same thing with Mr. Dussel, even though he didn’t have any more room in the Annex, he had the compassion to take him in and figure a way that made him comfortable. In this example, it shows that instead of having all the room for himself, Mr. Frank had the compassion to give the Van Daans and Mr. Dussel a place to hide. In the Annex, Mr. Frank sacrificed a lot for his family as well as the rest of the residence staying with him too. As it says in dictionary.com the word sacrificed defines as “an act of giving up something valued for the sake of something else regarded as more important or worthy”. For example, Mr. Frank sacrificed his time to talk with Anne instead of finishing his work. Mr. Frank as well sacrifices his food, so there will be more for everyone else. While everyone is whining and complaining that there is not enough food, Mr. Frank shares his food with the people in the

Are people born with a complete quandary when it comes to compassion or is it something that has always been there? Barbara Lazear Ascher, born in 1946, writes, “On Compassion.” Having lived in New York City, Ascher is able to take first hand examples from the city to show the affection people have towards each other. Ascher is able to illustrate that compassion is something that has to be taught because of the adversity at people’s heels by including tone, persuasive appeals, and the mode of comparing and contrast in her essay, “On Compassion.”…

Frank thrived in and Mr. Van Daan struggled. It was a fearful time for everyone in the annex. Mr. Van Daan didn’t help bring solace to that fear. For instance, when the burglar was downstairs he did not dare go downstairs with Mr. Frank to see what the commotion was. Everything that makes him a bad father and husband is a contribution to his poor leadership skills. By stealing the food he showed he was a selfish leader and his hunger was more important than the possible survival of others. Putting himself before others is the recipe for being a bad leader. On the other hand, Mr. Frank was a courageous and good leader. All the qualities that he showed as a husband and father was what he showed as a leader. He was very brave on Hanukkah when the thief broke into the building, he went downstairs to see what it was or if he could scare him away. “I’m going down.” (pg. 486). He was a peacemaker in a time of no peace. He should have the upmost respect for…

I agree with Martha C. Nussbaum ideas about compassion. I believe that having compassion is a very important thing to have in life. People have to be able to understand what it is like to be in a situation, because at any point in time, it could be you in that situation. Having compassion should include be is not limited to leaving people that need help, thinking what would I want someone to do if I was in this situation.…

Compassion is something we all must give and receive because compassion is the one thing that makes us human. It is when somebody shows someone else that they care about them, and to stop ones suffering. In other words: love. It is not possible to have love without compassion. The two work together like clockwork. Compassion is necessary to the human experience because if someone is not shown compassion (thus not experiencing it) they will suffer.…

The word sacrifice is defined as the act of forfeiting one thing for another thing considered to be of greater value. The theme of sacrifice is one that is exemplified throughout both Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac, the story of a selfless hero, and Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House, which depicts the life of a woman in the 19th century. In these two plays, sacrifice takes many forms: the entity that is given up can be a something material, something physical, or even something abstract. Comparable examples of sacrifices can be seen in both plays, whether it be for love, for the happiness of others, or for pride.…

There is no doubt there are egotistical, self-absorbed people in today’s society. Their personal choices are made through the idea of benefiting just themselves. Now, there are charitable individuals in this world that drive, not just themselves, but everyone around them to a happier state in life, even if that means making sacrifices. Sacrifice is the ability to give up something with the intention of it resulting for the greater good. If everyone in this world conducts sacrifices on the daily, there would eventually be nothing to sacrifice for. Unfortunately, that would never happen, prompting more people, like my parents, to make all these sacrifices.…

To me, compassion is what pushes us to meet someone in their pain, in their hurt, or in their struggle. The first time I remember receiving compassion was when I was in second grade on a middle-of-the-night flight from Germany to the States. Due to my ear tubes, I was experiencing great ear pain, and a flight attendant noticed my distress. She looked to my mom and asked if she could massage my hand in order to relieve the pain. She took the time to massage my hand, knowing the correct pressure points to alleviate my ear pain, and low and behold, it worked. This flight attendant had to have felt compassion towards my situation and then had a desire to act, in accordance with the Miriam-Webster definition. This is just one small story, but it highlights how far compassion can…

Right now the three families are in the main room of the Annex and the phone is ringing right outside the Annex. Miep, One of the people that are helping the Jewish families hide, hasn’t been to the Annex in for 3 days which is weird for her. The phone keeps going off and everyone is arguing whether or not to go answer the phone, and Mr. Frank says this amazing quote, "If we wait patiently, quietly, I believe that help will come" (430). In the end Mr. Frank is the only one to survive WWII and the Nazi Death Camps. There's one other line in this story that I want to bring attention to and that is, " For two long years we have lived here, side by side. We have managed to live in peace. Are we now going to throw it all away" (425) ? This shows perfectly how patient Mr. Frank is, He waited all ready for two years and he is ready to wait two more years. That is what let him survive for so long in the Nazi…
