Erin Gruwell, an autobiography on the Freedom Writers Foundation Website, states, “When I walked into my first class as a new teacher, I could not have been less prepared to deal with the harsh realities of the lives of my students or the way the outside world would crash into my classroom.” The 150 freshmen in her classroom were considered “unteachables” and they were not expected to graduate. No one could change the lives of these kids; they did not want to learn nor did anyone support them. Kids in the classroom were in gangs, they had problems at home, they were in poverty, and no one was there for them. Erin Gruwell made it a mission to change these students and connect with them as if they were her children but this was very challenging. Erin was white, she did not understand the situations, and the students disliked her because of these things. The administrators, her husband, and her dad expected her to quit as soon she learned about the violence in the class. Days later, she saw a drawing in the classroom that depicted one of her students (Sharaud) with big lips. From there on, she related this drawing to the Nazis because the Nazis would also draw pictures of the people they disliked. Mr. Pickle, an article titled “Erin Gruwell,” states, “This lead to the Holocaust. Erin found that her students never even knew about the Holocaust, but it was …show more content…

People read and watch things about heroes all the time because in the deepest reaches of their mind they aspire to be among their ranks. The problem with the average person’s desire to be a hero is that they don’t truly know what a hero is. A hero is able to bounce back from a defeat that would stop any normal man in their tracks, they are inspirational, they gain followers and believers just by doing what they think is right, and they don’t have to be strong, but have to be able to take mental punishment like no other.…

Three people that inspire me or made me want to make a difference in the world are Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr. , and Rosa Parks. They are my heros because they done things that they believe in and that they thought were fair because they wanted to make sure everyone had rights to do whatever they want whenever they wanted to do it. How does one achieve hero status? To me, there are two definitions of hero, (1) a person who is regarded as a model that is respected for qualities or achievements, and (2) anyone that in the face of danger and adversity or from a position of weakness displays courage and the will for self-sacrifice. The heroes or heroines in The Help are the latter. The Help by Kathryn Stockett is a novel about black maids in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. The black maids work with Skeeter Phelan, a young white woman, to write a tell-all book about what it’s like to work as a black maid in the white homes of the segregated South. The chapters are narrated through the eyes of the three main heroes—Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter. Skeeter Phelan is an aspiring writer who wants to create a series of truthful interviews with local black maids. “I’d like to write this showing the point of view of the help…They raise a white child and then twenty years later the child becomes the employer. It’s that irony, that they love us, yet…We don’t even allow them to use the toilet in the house. (p. 123).” Even if they're published anonymously, the risk is great; still, Aibileen and Minnie agree to participate, and they boldly recruit other maids to…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

Heroism can only truly be defined subjectively. Every single one of us can discover courageous qualities within any individual: it all depends on which endeavors a person finds heroic. In my opinion, a hero is someone who displays bravery or self sacrifice in the face of misfortune. They are not afraid to intervene and rectify what they see is wrong, despite the situation. Challenges may be confronted along the way, but a hero will arrive stronger than before. They will finish by attempting to or fully producing a positive impact on society. My personal role model is Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a leader of the women’s rights movement during the 19th century. She is someone who manifested all of these heroic traits by combatting the sexist ideas people had during this era. Throughout the course of her life, she shattered the expectations…

Heroism is being passionate. Whether that passion be for a person, for art, equality, etc, it is what drives someone to be extraordinary. It makes them fight, it makes them stand up, it ignites the fire in a hero's heart. For instance, Sylvia Rivera, while making a speech for the Stonewall movement, said, "I'll be the first one to step on any organization, and politician's…

A hero is different from others and does something others cannot. Grant’s drive to defy stereo type, become a teacher, and contribute to the community demonstrates that he is a hero. Grant is an African American son of cane-cutters who worked on a Louisiana plantation. He grew up working a labor job and was expected by society to continue as a laborer. Through determination he was able to escape his surroundings to earn a college education. He returns as an educated university man hoping to make a positive impact on society, but is still looked down upon. College gave him a new perspective and educated way of speaking and thinking, but he was still not equal to the whites. Grant continued to persevere through segregation and unfair treatment. He maintained his goal of making a difference by teaching in a church without desks or other supplies. Grants ability to escape his environment and stereotyping, earn an education, and return to his community to make changes, makes him different from others in his community. Grant was different from others and taught in conditions that most could not. Grant is a hero.…

    Example Of Heroism Essay

Heroes have three main traits: enough guts to ignore those who have a problem with their goals and the way they are living their life, devotion to their cause, and benevolence towards everyone, no matter what. They do their best to be brave, courageous, and have spirit; in one word, gutsy. Even though many people didn’t support her and called her a witch, Joan of Arc had the bravery and strength to continue fighting for her cause. She used her courage and spirit to ignore negative opinions from the people around her. Heroes are devoted to their cause, and are persistent in trying to reach their goals, especially through hard times. An example is Penelope, wife of Odysseus. He went away to fight in a war, and didn’t come back. “Everyone by now took for granted that he was dead, except Penelope, his wife…the hope that her husband would return was faint, but it never died.” (Mythology, Edith Hamilton.) Penelope waited twenty…

A hero never does heroic actions just so people recognize and praise them. Many heroes are not even recognized for their actions, but that doesn’t stop them from continuing and doing the right things. For example, soldiers who are constantly fighting for our country. Not every single one of them end up on the news, or trend on twitter, but they don’t stop fighting for our country because of that. They know it is the right thing so therefore they will continue doing it, praised or not. As Tom Hanks said, “A hero is somebody who voluntarily walks into the unknown.” Also a hero is not someone who gives up because of one obstacle. A hero is an individual who keeps going even in spite of the immense obstacle. For instance, in the poem, ‘A Man’, the poet describes a soldier who loses his arm while fighting for his country. In the beginning of her poem, she describes the soldier’s physical limitations from losing his arm, yet the soldier speaks of compensating for his physical disability with enthusiasm, “He set himself to do everything with twice as much enthusiasm. And where the arm had been torn away a wing grew” (Line 15). The first part dwells on the thought he can only do half of everything, such as a harvest, either tune or play an accompaniment on a piano, banging on a door, and holding his…

Later on, after the person gets the concept of what a hero is, they can learn more about actual heroes and what makes them one. For the most part, ordinarily, everyone has either, one or a couple of heroes. An example of a hero can be Michelle Obama .Michelle is a hero for many reasons, she is an inspiration for many people and participated in campaigns like “Let’s Move” and “Joining Forces”. Michelle is a very influential person to others, but what makes her a hero is that she takes advantage of her position to encourage others to help and become heroes themselves! Another hero is Coco Chanel. She might not be the first person who pops up in people’s minds…
