Who Is Canute King
Canute was the son of Sweyn I Forkbeard, the king of Denmark, and grandson of the Polish ruler Mieszko. As a young man, Canute was left in charge of the fleet at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. There it is said that he met Aelfgifu, daughter of an ealdorman of Northumbria, who bore him his two sons, Sweyn and Harold. By the end of 1013, Sweyn I Forkbeard was accepted as king of England, but died in February 1014. Canute and the men of Lindsey planned an expedition, but Canute deserted his allies at Easter and sailed to Denmark, leaving his hostages ashore at Sandwich. In 1015 he returned and began a long struggle with Aethelred’s son Edmund II Ironside. After Aethelred died in April 1016, the English witan elected Canute king at Southampton. He

Gene Yang uses the symbolism of Transformer and Jin Perms to demonstrate the idea that Jin wants to be an American + change his hair as an American and to look like an American. Symbolism is a literary technique that authors employ by attributed to natural objects or facts. At the beginning of the book, Jin and Wei-Chen meet in the first time in school and talk about the toy robot: “<What is that?>” “<A toy robot.>” “<He can change into a robot monkey.>” “<My father gave it to me just before I left. As a good-bye present.>” (39). Jin and Wei-Chen were talking about the toy robot but they were talking in their own language and not in english. It connects to my point because Jin wants to be an American but he still talking in his own language. At the middle of the book, Jin was at his locker, Wei-Chen and Suzy was walking in the hallway when Suzy and Wei-Chen saw Jin hair and they was surprise. “…” “…” “…Jin?” “What?” “Why is your hair- MMPH” “Nothing nice perm!” “Thanks! See you guys at lunch” “Yeah! See ya!” “Be Nice! He’s your best friend!” “Why is his hair a broccoli?!”(98). Jin change his hair to look like an American and act like an American. It connects to my point because Jin wants to look like an American but also he wanted to look like Greg to have a chance with Amelia. The author Gene Yang uses the symbolism of Transformer and Jin Perms to demonstrate the idea that Jin wants to be an American + change his hair as an American and to look like an…

Edward IV, king of England, died suddenly and prematurely at Windsor castle – perhaps from a stroke, or peritonitis or even a chill caught while on a fishing trip – in April 1483 aged only 40 years. He had enjoyed a relatively successful reign, by the standards of the day, restoring peace after the disordered period of Lancastrian rule and providing his subjects with some much needed stability. Edward IV had been a strong king after 1471, able to control the rival noble factions, but his death opened up a destructive, disastrous Yorkist family feud. The throne should have passed smoothly to his son; Edward V. This however didn’t happen due to his brother, Richard duke of Gloucester wanting the power; Edward changed his will on his death bed so his wishes weren’t clear; his marriage to Elizabeth Woodville. On his death a bitter family feud was started.…

GEATLAND- Beowulf, 85, of Geatland, passed away at his residence due to natural causes. He was born in 495 A.D. at the family home in Geatland. Noted warrior and adventurer, Beowulf also had a great deal of Honor. The King Hrothgar had aided his own father in a time of need, and Beowulf readily served the King in his father’s stead. When Beowulf was a young man, he sailed to Denmark and defeated the seemingly unconquerable monster called Grendel. His not using anything, save his own bare hands, as the monster had no weapons, could attest to Beowulf’s sense of fairness as well along with the sheer strength it would take to triumph. After defeating Grendel, Grendel’s mother was a force to be reckoned with. Not knowing if he would come back alive, Beowulf still went and fought the demon. And yet again, he was met with success. Not above a show of heroism, he cut off the head of Grendel that was in the lair and brought it to King Hrothgar. While bestowed with invaluable riches, it was more the glory and honor that Beowulf lived and eventually died for. As his cousin, Heardred, the only son of Hygelac, had perished years before, Beowulf became his uncle’s heir. Upon the death of his uncle, King Hygelac, Beowulf became King of the Geats. After reigning for 50 years, a dragon was awakened. Beowulf was an old King by now, but being who he was, fought anyway. Although the dragon took the beloved King’s life, Beowulf, in a sheer act of bravery and will, took the dragon’s as well; thereby making his kingdom safe once again. Beowulf was born to be destined for greatness. He lived, breathed, and died by the principle of a noble leader: to protect and fight for the people. He was preceded in death by his father, Ecgtheow; grandfather, Hrethel; cousin, Heardred; and three uncles, Hygelac, Herebeald, and Haethcyn.. He is survived by his predecessor and distant cousin, Wiglaf. Wiglaf had spoken about Beowulf's humble attributes…

King Philip II of Spain was murdered, but by who? With a sum of at least 20 suspects that would have strong reasoning to kill him, who did it? He was found poisoned in bed early one morning, his murderer escaped his castle never to be found. However, upon further investigation, 10 highly interesting clues were found in a burlap sack stuffed behind a statue of the Virgin and Child. Those clues consisted of: A map from Orelius’ Typus Orbus Terrarum, keys to manacles, silver coins, potatoes, Las Casas’ Apologetic History, Elizabeth I’s speech at Tilbury, a Holy Bible in Dutch, Columbus’ Journal, Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises, and a note saying, “It’s working, my friends…”.…

King Bantam is T.A.G Hungerford’s autobiography, which was published in 1983. This autobiography is written as a short story and it is about his childhood and the mischievous innocence that it contains. The text conveys the idea that children don’t purposefully do bad things because they are too innocent to know what’s right and wrong. Another idea presented is that motherly love usually foreshadows the mistakes of their children. Hungerford presents these ideas through the use of written conventions such as setting, P.O.V, language and characterization to receive a positive response from the readers.…

    The Last King of scotland

Never have I been so intrigued in a political thriller. What captivated me more in ‘The Last King of Scotland’ was the fact that this film was based on similar events that occurred in Idi Amin’s life, a Ugandan dictator. Books or films that are true or partially true, to me, become ten times more interesting and/or scary. I admired Idi Amin’s hunger for power. He was selfishly ambitious. The ambition he had towards gaining power was clearly his number one priority. When we were first introduced to Idi Amin, he presents himself with such great charisma. “I know who you are and what you are. I am you,” and “This will be a government of action, not of words,” are promises that Amin preaches at a public event where thousands of Ugandan villagers attended. The villagers chant “Amin, Amin, Amin!” in support of the promising future Amin says is ahead of his country, Uganda. Amin uses his great orator skills to captivate the audience and swiftly persuades them to support and cheer along with him. The grin on Amin’s face showed his pleasure from the crowd’s reaction to his speech and he definitely liked being the centre of attention. His magnetic personality put me under his manipulative and charming spell. Being the loud and confident person I am I could see myself in Amin. He was someone I wanted to be. A leader. I was instantly a fan of his character. I eagerly wanted to learn more about him but my curiosities about the ‘charismatic’ Amin did not last long. Quite early into the film, I was already able to distinguish Amin’s very strange behaviour changes. There are many scenes where Idi Amin’s decisions show how desperate and how far he would go to maintain his power over Uganda. The “Attack on Amin” scene was an eye opener for both Amin and I. As Amin and his physician, Nicholas Garrigan,…
