White Nursing Discrimination
In the 18th century, the nursing profession was seen as a profession for low class, poorly-bred woman. Hospital nurses, in Florence Nightingale words were “too old, too weak, too drunken, too dirty, too stolid, or too bad to do anything else.” Thank to Florence Nightingale, the nursing profession gain respect and gave woman a profession where they could strive. However, the nursing profession was pretty much set up for white woman specifically. African American women were discriminated in every single way possible.
The main obstacle African American women encountered when trying to gain training and education in the nursing profession was racism and segregation. “Most white nursing schools in the North adopted racial quotas, while all nursing schools in the South denied admission to black women”.(Hine, 6). White graduate nurses where able to hold a higher position, such as an administration position while African American nurses were denied any higher position because those positions were considered territory of black male physicians or white female administration. It provided a open door to young African American women who wanted to escape from poverty. Another reason was the desire to help out others and make a difference.     The reason why the Navy was in the most desperate need for nurses is because of their countless restrictions on race, marriage status, and age. During the year of 1942, Navy Nurses had to be singles and under the age of 40. Not only this – but if she wanted to get married, she had to resign. With this ruling, many Nurses switched to the Army Corps- which permitted marriages. It wasn’t until the year 1941 that the U.S. limited the racial segregation and permitted Black nurses. There were over three hundred Black nurses that served in the Army Nurse Corps. However, The Navy Nurse Corps would still not accept any Black nurses. “A catastrophe in the low number of nurses was only avoided by the quick surrender of Japan following the atomic bombings. It wasn’t until the year 1945, that the Navy halt their active recruiting of nurses.” - (Blizkriegbaby) The inequality for military nurses had not ended even after the War was won. “When America entered World War II, the Navy Nurses had been granted neither the status of Naval officers nor the rating of enlisted personnel. Only Army Nurses had received the relative rank of officers in 1920.
