“Build a safe haven from their what and whys, we shelter their minds with ivory lies, so innocent and sweet, that’s what I adore” just like what Lovehatehero, a band, sings in the song, ivory lies build up a safe place for beautiful things, even if they are lies, ultimately. However, white lies, just like the pure color, are good things. In a family, parents tell little white lies to encourage their kids to behave nicely, for example. A survey found that parents tell their children 3000 white lies on average, just to get their own way as the kids grow up, a Daily Mail reporter said. When all else fail according to 44% respondents, white lies have to be told. There are stories like Father Christmas give presents to good children or,Father Christmas only visit kids who go to sleep and sitting too close to the TV makes your eyes go square, which ranked top three on the list. Parents are finding their ways in raising and taking care of children. In the view of innocence and naïve, children always take those stories coming out from their parents’ mouth serious. Though are stories terrifying mostly, kids grow up under dads and moms' umbrella without sleep-insufficiency and poor eyesight. Sometimes, ivory lies stem from friends’ love for you. Why so? That’s because your friends don’t want you to get hurt and they want happiness and hopes to be around you. Johnsy , a dying woman in O. Henry’s novel the last leaf, said in a shaky voice, “look out the window, dear, at the last ivy leaf on the wall. Didn’t you wonder why it never flutter or moved when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it’s Behrman’s masterpiece—he painted it there the night that the last leaf fell”. (page4)Knowing that Johnsy conceives the last leaf as the sign of the end of her life, Behrman decided to paint the last leaf that never falls to keep her life along. I’m touched mostly by Johnsy, actually. She did nothing but try so hard

After revisiting Ericsson's interpretation of the ways we lie, I stumbled upon a quote were she stated “It is an act of subtle arrogance for anyone to decide what is best for anyone else”. She was inferring that an individual can not imply that their suggestion is the best option for anyone else. Clearly, that statement is true for numerous reasons. An individual can not state a suggestion towards someone saying it is best for them. While in reality, it's just a faulty lie. People would rather give inaccuracy information instead of telling the honest truth. For example,my neighbor ask for cooking advice and I shelter he or she with lies such as”Your cooking is nice and tasteful”. When in reality I could just give he or she the advice they need to improve their cooking. With that said, white lies (as Ericsson refers to) are genuinely feeling holders.…

First question that crosses the child's mind once they find out: “What else are my parents lying about?” and second, “Did I really have to go through some of the horrendous things that such lying caused?” For example, the Easter Bunny. Some children are afraid to go see that guy at the mall. My parents, for one, scarred me for life from their lying when it comes to the Easter Bunny. It started when my mom was cleaning my ears with a q-tip and looked at the tip of it to see it was orange.…

In the play, ‘Brilliant Lies', David Williamson uses a number of techniques to expand on the concepts introduced in the title. He uses characters and their back stories to build a supporting argument to compliment the text's overall theme that everyone lies to protect themselves. Susy's sexual harassment claim contains the most evident form of lies throughout the text, however Vince and Gary's relationship, Susy's family history, and even Marion's favouritism with clients all help to identify the main themes to the reader.…

    Gorilla, My Love

In the short story, “Gorilla, My Love”, author Toni Cade Bambara narrates a story about the way children overanalyze little white lies. Bambara tells the story as if a child was talking in first-person view. Throughout the story Hazel talks about different instances of her share of what she thought was being lied to. The read was very enjoyable because it was something that I could relate to. For instance, when Hazel and her friend are at the movie theater and she says, “ …we yell some more and some kids slip under the rope and run up and down the aisle just to show it take more than some dusty ole velvet rope to tie us down.” (Bambara 450) As I child I thought I could anything I wanted and have no repercussions to pay, the world was my playground. When I was a child I also didn’t understand why adults would tell lies, and now as a young-adult I understand the reasoning behind it. The text of the short story is written in a style as if a child was talking, such as the grammatical errors, and movement from topic to topic. All of these events helped me further relate to the story and grasp the main theme of betrayal. In my analysis I will talk about the symbols; fear, rebellion, and love and how they connect to the main theme of betrayal.…

    8. I would say Ericsson’s tone for the most part stays light and at some points even humorous. She uses just enough humor to keep the reader hooked and entertained but not too much so it doesn’t mock. I also think there is almost a hint of guilt in her tone for her lies and for they war all people lie to each…

In America, one thing everybody has in common is lying; it is a natural humanistic behavior. Author Stephanie Ericsson describes some of the average every day lies in her essay “The Ways We Lie”. She describes the white lie as the liar assuming that the truth will cause more damage than the simple, harmless untruth; and an out-and-out lie she describes as the bald-faced lie. A lot of people lie without realizing it. Through personal experience, white lies and out-and-out lies have come across my path a lot in my lifetime.…

Whether it be to protect a friend, boost one’s confidence, gain a reward or raise or just to bother a peer, lies are dropped everywhere. We fear what we care about the most which lends itself to the fact that the two most frequent reasons for lying are care and…

In the poem “White Lies” by Natasha Trethewey I felt like this poem represents imagism because it mentions six different colors all describing lies. It’s about an African American girl that may tell little lies that don’t really mean much. She lies about where she lives, where she brought her clothes, and would also lie about being African American. When she lies about her skin color in the line, “I could even keep quiet, quiet as kept, like the time a white girl said (squeezing my hand), Now we have three of us in this class.” It’s sad because she is not lying to act cool. When she writes “squeezing my hand,” I sensed that she only lied because she liked the way the girl was acting like her friend. The first stanza does a really good job in explaining why this poem would fit in the imagery category because it describes that she is really light skinned for an African American. It states, “I was growing up/light-bright, near-white, high-yellow, red-boned in a black place.” The words “light-bright” and “near-white” make you think of a very light color. I also got the double meaning with the color white. White is connected throughout the poem to lies, at the end of the poem it is connected to soap that will purify or cleanse someone. She writes, “She laid her hands on me, then washed out my mouth with Ivory soap. This is to purify, she said, and cleanse your lying tongue.” Theses few lines make you think that she’s trying to describe white as the right thing. The author does this again in the second stanza when she writes, “I could act like my homemade dresses come straight out of the window at Maison Blanche.” This line makes me think that dresses from the White House are better than others. I think the overall message of this little girl is that she used to think that white was better than black. Clothes were better from the white house, minds are more pure with white soap, and lies that are only white are very…
