Which Permanent Marker Is the Best?
RESEARCH REPORT

Introduction: A permanent marker is a type of marker pen that is used to create permanent writing on an object. Generally the liquid is water resistant, and is capable of writing on many surfaces from paper to metal to stone. They come in a variety of tip sizes (ultra fine to wide), shapes (chisel point, bullet tip, and wide bristle), and colors (metallic, non metallic, or ultraviolet reactive). Like spray paint these markers give off volatile organic compounds. Permanent marker can be removed using a dry erase marker on certain surfaces such as a whiteboard as it contains acetone. Alcohol based markers such as Sharpies are said to be safer, with water-based markers being the safest of all. The popular permanent markers are Sharpie, Stanford king size permanent marker, Marks a lot and Redi Mark +.
Ingredients in the permanent marker ink: Permanent inks contain three main ingredients: colorant, carrier (solvent), and resin (polymer). Pigments do not fade like dyes and do not bleed through paper. Solvents for the old markers (up until the 1990 's) were nasty-smelling organic chemicals such as xylene. Nowadays, the solvent of choice is an alcohol (ethanol or isopropanol), which is more environmentally friendly and better smelling, while still evaporating quickly to prevent messy smearing, etc. Finally, there is a resin or polymer that is added as a "binder" that promotes adhesion. A permanent resin is not permanent unless it sticks like glue to most of the surfaces it is written on. The resin forms a film (once the alcohol evaporates) that allows the ink to write smoothly and uniformly on any surface (smooth or rough) while acting like glue for the pigment. Resins come in all shapes and sizes, typically, urethane acrylic resins are used (like those used in house paints).
Permanent markers on surfaces: Most permanent markers create stains that are difficult to treat. If you clean the stain immediately after it was made, you may be able to

We made research of this topic on the World Wide Web, we found out more about what a Permanent Marker is, and what makes it permanent. We found out that a permanent marker's ink must contain three ingredients in order to work: colorant, carrier and resin. The colorant is what gives the ink color. If a marker only contains the colorant, it may be dissolved by a liquid substance that is capable of dissolving other substances, the colorant would turn to dust and fall off the paper as soon as the solvent dried or evaporated. The carriers are described as solvents; they must be able to evaporate quickly once the ink is used, because they transmit the dye into paper. The resin causes the ink to stick to a surface, so it must have a "sticky" quality, forming a film over the pigment once the carrier evaporates.…

Teacher writes 1) 4/7 x 8/7= 2) 1/3 x 4/5 = on the white board. “So for the last couple of days we have been learning how to multiply fractions. Before we move on I want to review them.” Teacher passes out paper. I want you to try problems #1 and #2 on your own; I will give you five minutes. Teacher allows students to work. Ok who can tell me what’s the first step we have to do to this problems. Yes we make sure the fractions are lined up horizontally. And then? Then we multiply across. Good. So what do we multiply first? Yes, we take the numerators and multiply which is 4 x 8= 32, what do we do next? Good we multiply the denominators, 7 x 7= 49. Ok, so is my answer 32/49. Teacher follows the same procedure for problem #2.…

Commercial inks used today on our pens and printers as we know are simple but little we know about it is that it has complete compositions. Pen inks that were used in the early times were iron gall inks, but because of its corrosive effect on paper, its component were changed and here they are a little amount of phosphoric acid ester, imidazoline-type activator, polytyethylenealkylamine, polyotyethylent, alkylame and alkylalkanolamide. But these are not the only substances that can be found in pen inks, there may be toluene and xylene, and other heavy metal compounds which may cause skin irritating, nauseas, blurred visions, dizziness and drowsiness. These substances are also non-renewable oils.…

Dye-based inks are generally much stronger than pigment-based inks and can produce much more color of a given density per unit of mass. However, because dyes are dissolved in the liquid phase, they have a tendency to soak into paper, making the ink less efficient and potentially allowing the ink to bleed at the edges of an image.…
