I, up to the age of 13 lived in the country of Saudi Arabia. My father went there on a transfer in the 1980’s. My parents gave birth to me in the port city of Jeddah and I attended a British International School during my pre-teen years. I was admitted into the KS3 program. Lack of communication with fellow Saudi Arabians caused me a lot of distress. However, as a result I started learning Arabic, the national language of Saudi Arabia. Soon, I became fluent in the language and could speak like an Arab. I loved the practice of learning new languages, so I started learning Urdu, my parents’ language while I was studying ‘Intermediate Spanish’ and mastering the English Language in full depth. By the time I was 11, I could speak four languages fluently and could converse in Spanish. My family and I then decided to move back to the state of Texas in the year 2013. It was a humungous change. From the British curriculum to the American curriculum, from the metric system to the imperial system, from private schooling to public…

Being born and raised in America, English was automatically my first language. Nevertheless, my parents were keen on making me and my siblings learn their native tongue, my fathers Yemeni culture and my mothers Turkish culture and most importantly, our religion. As soon as they can, my parents enrolled me and my siblings in Arabic school and Islamic studies. There we learned how to read, write and fluently speak Arabic and also memorize and study the Holy Quran. At home, my mother schooled us on the Turkish language. The essence of my childhood was of culture…

My native language is Arabic and I hail from Saudi Arabia. My mother played a key role in instilling the desire to learn the English language. My first lessons begun at the tender age of 7 years, my mother used simple English words and numbers to teach me how to pronounce English words. My mother is not a proficient English speaker but the little words she knew she taught me. When I was enrolled in elementary school there were no English lessons I was deeply disappointed by this aspect. My only option was to learn the English dialect through cartoons and television programs and films. The most effective English learning tool came in form of a present from my aunt. The present was a videogame console and all games were English this exciting learning opportunity was challenged by my mother’s restrictions as she wanted me to focus more on my classwork. Since no one in my family understood the English dialect I decided to learn English through my own understanding and interpretations of the words I read or heard.…

Two years ago when I first came here, I encountered another unimaginable problem in my life – I understood little in class just because of my poor English. I was depressed and sighed in despair all the time. It was my mother and teachers who inspired me and gave me a lot of encouragement. They told me that difficulty was everywhere and it could accompany anybody anytime. As long as we got ready and took actions, nothing was impossible. From then on, I got up early every day to practice speaking English, listening to English and reading English. Besides, whenever I was free, I went to various markets…

We are usually asked this question very early in life: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” is one of the most popular questions asked by your parents or relatives. Parents usually ask this question to their children to encourage their kids about their future. It seems like an easy question, but its not. Not many children know what they want to be when they grow up. Many of us say those careers that we think are the most popular such as; police officer, firefighter, nurse, teacher, or a doctor. I can remember when my parents would ask, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” The first thing that came to my mind was a police officer and a dancer. All I knew was that I wanted to be a police officer because I wanted to be like my dad and a dancer because I wanted to teach people how dance. Unfortunately, as I grew up, I came to realize that it would take much effort to obtain a diploma in both of those professions. No one ever mentioned the hard work or how long it actually takes to become a police officer or a professional dancer. All I heard was, “You can become whatever you want.”…

    When You Are Old

While the poem, “When You Are Old,” written by William Butler Yeats was written in 1893, the same themes of love, regret, longing, are still very much a part of today’s world. Sometimes you have to love someone from afar and other times you only realize that you had true love when it’s too late. This could be because when you are together you are toxic for one another or if you get to close and love them you will just end up hurt. It is known that he proposed many times to Maud Gonne but was rejected each time. He also proposed to her daughter who also rejected him. A person can only take so much rejection and I believe this is the way Yeats shows he is tired of being rejected. In this poem he is addressing Maud, who he is in love with, saying that when she is aged she should read a particular book which will remind her of her youth. She will remember the people who had loved her grace and her beauty with either real or fake sentiments in the past, and also that one man, Yeats himself, who had loved her soul unconditionally as she grows old and the way her looks changed. As she is reminded of him, she will regret her missed opportunity of true love.…
