When We Live Away By Henry Longfellow
I have chosen this poem to write about because the poem seems to be giving a clear message about how life can be taken away from you and death can come at anytime. This poem interest me because Henry Longfellow explains how people should not waste their life away, but instead takes advantage of their life. I like this poem because I was able to understand the poem’s meaning and it helped me understand how I and everyone else shouldn’t waste the life they have because today may be their last day and they may never see tomorrow. This poem relates to the world we live in as how many people don’t take advantage of life and always see the negative side of living instead of seeing the positive side of living, this leads to people to give up on life …show more content…
Many people are sad to be living, but he does not want us to be sad, but to instead take risks and enjoy life because life can be taken from us at any day. Our goal is to not to be buried or die, but to enjoy our lives to the fullest because we are here on earth temporary and our heart beats strong every day but one day it will stop, so we should take advantage of every day and not be sad even when we face difficult challenges. Many people tend to live in the past, but we shouldn’t do that instead we should live in the present. Live for today. Leave the past in the past, and look forward to the future and to learn from others for then we won’t have to make the same mistakes as they did and to not give up on our life, even at the darkest time because all we have to do it get through it and wait until our success for it comes. In the poem, Henry wrote a simile, “And our hearts, though stout and brave,/ Still, like muffled drums, and beating/ Funeral marches to the graves./” explains how our hearts beats like drums, but like how drums always beats until the end of a song our heart beats until our life is over. He also describes, “In the world’s broad field of battle./” of how every day for everyone is a battle to survive and live because everyone is competing against death everyday while others don’t. The seventh and eighth stanza explains how when people die they leave a “mark” for us to

The true beauty of this poem for me, and what makes it so enigmatic, is the mutual recognition in a person, between two moments past and future, of one's frame of mind at the other moment. We are so long in time, that such connections are very, very rare, and to have a moment of empathy with one's future or past self is both to gain a momentary insight into the nature of life and aging, and to momentarily gain a new internal context to how we perceive the aging of others, and what it really means to…

Life is a Story “Live life to the fullest because you only get to live it once.” This quote provided by Ernest Hemingway perfectly epitomizes the main message in the play Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder. The author makes a point of saying that life is divided into three differential parts: Birth and Daily Life, Love and Marriage, and, of course, Death. Occasionally, this trinity of life may be unappreciated by one until it is too late.…

There is a multitude of poems written with the theme of death, be it in a positive light or negative. Some poets write poems that depict Death as a spine-chilling inevitable end, others hold respect for this natural occurrence. In Emily Dickinson’s poem “Because I could not stop for Death”, diction and personification is utilized to demonstrate the speaker’s cordial friendship with Death.…

However, the component of the poem that impacted me the most is the message it conveyed, and the applicable story that was used to deliver it. Typically the adult is our lives constantly tell us to “think before you act,” but can never provide an explanation as to why. I enjoyed studying this poem for it's underlying poignancy. As a reader, I was struck by the bleak tone of the closing lines. Having taken account of each and every aspect of his life; 'I balanced all...'; the speaker views the future as meaningless and futile: 'The years to come seemed a waste of breath...'. The final lines of the poem reflect the grim logic of a man who seems to regard his life as pointless and is ready to meet his fate 'somewhere among the clouds above'. The underyling poignancy is extremely evident at this stage as the reader feels that such a death as to die in action would be his final adventurous exploit.…

In this poem, a man looks back on his life. He reminisces about the work of his hands and a boat he built and the times spent on it. He thinks of his life and the years gone by, and through all of this, he thinks of his daughter and his love for her. The man realizes that toiling for gain is not the goal in life, as we cannot cheat death. He sees that there are things more important in life, such as the pure, simple love of a man for his daughter.…

His poem is not divorced from our everyday lives whereas lots of conventional poems we generally read are. Even if conventional poetry is indirectly connected to our reality, many readers have difficulties to find meanings from the poetry and apply them to their real lives. I think poetry is worth reading when it is humane enough so that people can draw meanings from it. If it insists on its conventional styles and forms too much, it becomes not humane anymore. Therefore, his thought is also applicable to this era, in particular, when everything changes so fast ever and so many ideas are overflowing here and there that many of us are confused about what paths to follow, while not realizing that clinging to conventional ways is not always the best strategy to live our…
