When The Sun Also Rises Essay
Although The Sun Also Rises is from Jake's perspective, the main character in this book is Brett, and the novel revolves around her maturity. From the very beginning, Brett's attitude towards relationships and love is shown. She's constantly engaged with numerous men while stringing along her "love", Jake, with little remorse. Even though Brett tells him that they could never be together, she constantly reminds Jake that she loves him. After her relationship with Romero, Brett no longer sees Jake as an option for her. Similarly, Jake realizes that Brett will never be his. As Brett matured after her time with Romero, both Brett and Jake realize that there's no hope for a romantic relationship between them. Before meeting Romero, Brett and Jake were stuck in an endless cycle. They "loved" each other, but Jake's injury prevented their …show more content…
Unlike her previous affairs, Romero is quite innocent, yet insanely driven and talented. She seduces him and starts an affair with him, making them fall in love. It upset many people who either want to have Brett for themselves or to preserve Romero's innocence and drive. Due to Brett's previous track record, people thought that Brett would get tired of Romero and dump him. However,it turns out that she dumped him in order to prevent herself from ruining Romeo; this is a sign of Brett's maturity. From her brief relationship with Romero, she formed an emotional connection and learned how to truly love someone. Because of this connection, Brett can act selflessly for someone else even though it hurts her. After maturing, Brett sees that her love for Jake is not the same as her love for Romero. Brett was willing to break up with Romero for his sake; however, she can never end her selfish relationship with Jake. Jake, after hearing about the break up, realizes that Brett will never love him like he wants her to nor will she start a romantic relationship with

    Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises has always been regarded as one of Ernest Hemingway’s most hated characters. Both critics and readers have seen her simply as a bitch, and do not view her as a likeable or relatable character in any way. Her alcoholism, her use and abuse of men, and her seeming indifference to Jake Barnes’s love are just a few reasons why Hemingway’s readers have not been able to stand Brett, and do not give her a fair chance. It is clear that Jake is biased in his narration, but no one wants to question his opinions and judgments of Brett; in fact, since the book was published, readers have blindly accepted Jake’s account of her. Likewise, Margot’s character in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” is also distorted by the male characters, specifically Wilson, and made to look guilty of a crime she did not commit. Although Jake in The Sun Also Rises and Wilson in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” show Brett and Margot negatively, both women are in fact capable of good qualities, and both represent the idea of the new woman in a positive way.…

    In the novel, Before Night Falls by Reinaldo Arenas who lived from 1943 to 1990, the author conveys many subjects and captures the reader to the full extent. Reinaldo Arenas, the author and the person who lived the experience writes this book for us in hopes of capturing our feelings and sympathy of the Cuban Revolution.
