When I Have Fears Before I Die
Bucket List
(A discussion of 3 things I would like to accomplish before I die) Dying is a strange thing. Some people are deathly afraid of it, while others look forward to the day they will leave this earth. Everyone wants to leave a legacy of some kind and would like to accomplish a few things before they pass away. People use the idea of death to live life to the fullest. They say that you only live once so you might as well live while you are young. People create crazy life goals of things they want to accomplish before they pass away. The thought of mortality drives people to do crazy things like skydive, swim with sharks, etc. Almost everyone has something they want to accomplish before they die. John Keats in his poem When I Have Fears

I absolutely love reading and I’m excited to be able to have more time to read for fun this summer. I have a lot of over 50 books that I would like to read before I graduate college. They vary in genre, but a majority of them are nonfiction and historical or philosophic. I love learning about what other people believe and how they live their lives. The library and coffee shops are my two absolute favorite places in the world. In college, I imagine if I’m not in my dorm room, I will be at one of those two locations. There is something about the smell of books and the feeling of a library that puts my mind at ease. It is like the feeling of standing by the ocean, with the breeze in my hair. It is a sense of freedom. My library would have a slide ladder as well as mahogany furniture. I want it to be my space where I read and relax. I imagine that I will have my desk and office there as well. For my sanity, I will have a library at my house. Reading about all these places around the world feeds my hunger to travel the world. I have traveled a lot in my short life, but there is so much more to see. Now that I have read more classics in literature, I would like to revisit some of the places I’ve been so I can make a literary connection. I desire to visit Berlin, Tintern Abbey, and so much more. I want to do what my parents did, and take my kids traveling. Those …show more content…
I have ambitions, but I’m not sure what exactly what I want to accomplish. I feel like in college I will be able to know what I want to do more. I relate a lot to John Keats When I Have Fears That I May Cease to Be and also Chapman’s Homer. I want to accomplish something great, and I didn’t truly appreciate world travel and literature until I took this class. I want my children to appreciate the country we live in, and treat everyone kindly and with respect, no matter their backgrounds and life. Love is the great overcomer, and only with Christ can people be changed. I want my children to have a strong foundation in the Church so they can love one another and change the world. Treating people kindly and with respect can go a long way in changing the world. I want my children to have good educations and I want them to be able to think for themselves. I want to leave a legacy in my family and write and journal my life so when I grow old, I can remember all the great memories and experiences I have had the opportunity to live. I am super excited to see what the future holds, because you can only plan so much. Life can get in the way, but I hope to accomplish these things before I

Why is it that death is the only certain thing that anyone and everyone should anticipate from life? Nothing in life is set; things can change in a matter of seconds. Death is the end; the end for the pain and for suffering that is going on in one’s life. A single event can change a person’s life forever, it gives them a different perspective, and it alters a path than they would have expected to be on. Both Go Ask Alice by Anonymous and You Before Me by Jojo Moyes are two perfect pieces of literature that illustrate how one event can change a being’s chores in life and kill them. Once any hopes and dreams prove to be unattainable, life becomes an unfortunate slippery slope of self-loaf and pain; it is up to this person to get themselves out of this new…

Death is never a welcome visitor. Death may come suddenly or be preceded by a long, lingering illness. No matter how we may sometimes think we are prepared for a death, it is always perceived as “sudden” and without warning. Many people are so afraid of death that the topic is totally avoided from any thought or discussion.…

What I do know is that I don't want to wake up ten, fifteen years from now with the bitter realization that I've wasted my life in a job I hate, because I was forced to decide on a career while I was still a teenager. I can only hope and pray that Jesus leads me in the right direction. But just because I may not know what I want to do in the future,it doesn't mean I don't know what kind of person I want to be. I want to be someone who helps people, someone who people can look up to, and can depend on. I feel like there aren't enough genuinely good people in this world, that they are few and far in between. The one genuinely good person I have ever had the pleasure of meeting was my mother, and sadly I won't be able to meet her for a long while. She was a wonderful woman and mother, and is my inspiration. I want to become one of those genuinely good people, like my mother, and I fell like the perfect place to discover how to become that person is at a university. The only thing I'm certain of is that I am a seventeen year old girl looking to get a good education, to learn everything there is to know about the world, and to live my life happy and without any…

    Life and Death Overtakes

Death is a dreaded word. It is a word that many people would not want to talk about. Death is considered a morbid word and many would not find this as an engaging topic. According to Patricelli (2007), “[d]eath remains a great mystery, one of the central issues with which religion and philosophy and science have wrestled since the beginning of human history. Even though dying is a natural part of existence, American culture is unique in the extent to which death is viewed as a taboo topic. Rather than having open discussions, we tend to view death as a feared enemy that can and should be defeated by modern medicine and machines”. There are also people that have negative connotations about death, rendering life even meaningless because of it. Death appears to render life meaningless for many people because they feel that there is no point in developing character or increasing knowledge if our progress is ultimately going to be thwarted by death (Augustine, 2000). But the author contends that there is a point in developing character and increasing knowledge before death overtakes us: to provide peace of mind and intellectual satisfaction to our lives and to the lives of those we care about for their own sake because pursuing these goals enriches our lives. From the fact that death is inevitable it does not follow that nothing we do matters now. On the contrary, our lives matter a great deal to us. If they did not, we would not find the idea of our own death so distressing--it wouldn't matter that our lives will come to an end. The fact that we're all eventually going to die has no relevance to whether our activities are worthwhile in the here and now: For an ill patient in a hospital a doctor's efforts to alleviate pain certainly does matter despite the fact that 'in the end' both the doctor and the patient will be dead (Augustine).…

Imagine being woken up by the phone ringing and it's the doctor. He says “your test results are in, your cancer has spread to your brain and it’s stage four. There is no cure for your disease and you have two months to live.” Initially you are afraid of what happens when you die and whether it will be quick and possibly painless. If you are narrow minded, this is the only concern you have. What you should be contemplating is the future and what you will miss. The worst thing about dying young is missing out on the greatest experiences in life. Two works that show that this belief is timeless are, “When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be” by John Keats, written in 1818 and “Demons”, by Imagine Dragons written in 2013. Though many fear death, they should fear never living a fulfilling life.…

Death eventually comes to everyone, and yet it is a phenomenon shrouded in mystery. Scholars and scientists try to understand it, philosophers pose theories and conclusions about it, artists try to capture it between streaks of paint across a canvas, while poets like Emily Dickinson explore it's meaning and influence through verse. Death is like an outward rush into the unknown where there is nothing recognizable and nothing to cling to. The unknown is always feared, and since nothing is known about death or an afterlife, people fear it.…

Dying is one sad moment; living unhappily is thousands, millions of sad moments spread over the years of your life. Someday we are all going to die. Even though we all know it, most of us spend our lives pretending as if we will live forever. Like Morrie, we should all live urgently, intensely and purposefully because, when you think about it, we all have a "fatal disease" -- life itself. No one knows how long he or she will live. To get the most out of life we should all live as if we were dying, because the truth is, we are. Life is short. Let's make sure we live each day with urgency, purpose and meaning.…
