What I Want To Be
Everyone wants to be something when they grow up. Not everyone gets the chance to be what they want to be. Not everyone is provided with an opportunity. I am lucky that I was given one and now I have to do my part by taking advantage of it. I know what I want to be and I’m certain that I want to be a successful computer science major. The moment I knew what I wanted to study in college was when my cousin Jonathan moved in with me and my family. I was eleven years old when Jonathan moved in with us, he was twenty years old. I had not made the transition from elementary school to middle school when I found out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Some freshmen in college are still trying to decide on what they would like to study.
Growing up, Jonathan was around computers constantly. He could build his own by the time he was in high school. He would always fix the family computer (that he built) whenever it gave us problems. “J” as Jonathan was known for that nickname by the majority of the family, was lucky to get a job right out of high school. In school, J took cisco classes at the vocational school during half of the school day, the other half; he would travel back to the high school by bus to attend his core classes. After high school Jonathan was offered a job at Professional Network Services otherwise known as PNS. He commuted from Altavista to Roanoke for work for two years! Jonathan has always been a big Apple fan. Whenever Apple releases a new product, Jonathan usually has it that day. Not only did I look up to Jonathan because he was older than me, but whenever I saw him working on a computer, I thought that was the coolest thing in the world. Jonathan’s passion for PCs sparked my fascination. Ever since Jonathan started living with us, I’ve known that I want to do something with computers when I grow up. I love being around them, whether I’m playing a game, working on one, or trouble shooting one for a friend; I never

I have always been fascinated with computers going back to when I was in elementary school. I was intrigued by the capabilities of technology, and after acquiring my own desktop computer I began to explore the vast combinations and possibilities of an operating system. Since I had yet to become connected to the internet, I spent my time teaching myself what each program and setting could produce. Much of my early knowledge of computers stemmed from my curiosity, and by fourth grade I was known as the “go to technician,” helping the teachers connect their laptop to the projector or other similar tasks. When our school added a new high-tech computer lab I was ecstatic, and in this lab I learned even more, adding to my existing knowledge. My reputation at school grew, and every year increasingly more teachers called on my assistance, even following me through middle school and high school. My interest continued, and for my eighth grade career fair project I built a fully running computer from spare parts, without a metal enclosure or hard drive, using a flash drive to boot and run a Linux based operating system. As a senior I work with my school’s IT Department as a student intern: solving problems, completing research, and maintaining the functionality of our equipment. I find helping others with my skills very rewarding and this further drives…

I’ve always had the same answer to the question of what I want to do when I’m grown up: “I don’t know, something I enjoy hopefully”. As overused as I think the saying is, the cliché saying of “Find something you enjoy doing, and you’ll never have to work a day in your life” does have some truth to it. Computer science is that thing I’ve found that I do truly enjoy, and getting into a career in it does fulfills the career goals I have for…

Almost a freshman in college, I only had vague ideas of what I wanted to do until I met people and learned more about myself. I knew I had some flexibility in my decisions; I could make mistakes as I’m only human. Not everyone knows what they want to do right away. That’s perfectly acceptable, figuring out life’s steps one at a time while enjoying the process is what matters. As I pursued pre-business, I learned more about myself and the two concentrations that appealed to me, which lead to my desire to tie in my interests to my career…

The multi-millionaire dollar empire that we know as Apple today started in the garage of Jobs’ parents. In 1975, Jobs and his friend, Steve Wozniak began building a prototype computer. One year later, this garage computer was dubbed “Apple I”. It was the first of its kind-- a personal computer. Less than two years later the Apple Inc. rolled out with Apple II which became the first widely-used personal computer in the world. Computers, previously common only to businesses, were now accessible to the average person. Personal computers changed the way people shared information; people could now communicate through email, and other online chatting sites, and by putting a personal computer in a person’s home they are able to access these utilities.…
