What I Learned From My Team Project
Memo

TO: Professor Megan MacAlystre

FROM: Chiderah Onyeukwu

DATE: April 24, 2015

SUBJECT: Team Project Individual Reflection

When this project was first assigned, my main goal was to work with a topic that I would enjoy. The opportunity to work on a Hogwarts house sorting survey geared towards your CU Summer Scholars Harry Potter class provided me with that enjoyable topic. As I started to work with the other members of MacAlystre’s Magisters to develop our deliverable, I realized that my teamwork skills were also being honed. This is most apparent because I had both positive and negative experiences with each of my teammates.

I think that having a better knowledge of the Harry Potter series, specifically the Hogwarts houses and how the main characters fit in to their respective houses, would have helped me better contribute to other parts of the project. My main job as Head Boy was to contribute to the development of the tangible deliverable, specifically which website and hosting package we wanted to use to host our survey. However, during the planning and question development phase of the process, I felt as if I was not contributing as well as I would have liked. Because of this, I realized that the important part of working in a group is not always how much you know in comparison to the other members, but how well you communicate within the group and how well you can apply your area of expertise for the overall success of the group.

Another positive I took from this process was learning when to make my voice heard and when to keep quiet. Personally, I have a problem with speaking out of turn and not being sensitive to other people’s feelings when I speak. Although there were times when I was frustrated with a team member or with a certain aspect of the project, I was occasionally compelled to stay quiet as to not upset the chemistry of the team. This can be a good talking point in an interview; it shows that I am a team player and that I will not

I would say that I felt more confident working with small groups or in the one-to-one scenario, rather than when I was in front of the whole class, being observed. For example,I was given ten minutes to introduce the idea of making stands for mdf mirrors that they were in the process of finishing. They had to design their stand in 2d design, which I had spent two nights trying to work out and still needed the…

Physical activities allow people to interact with others in different ways. In several competitive sports, games, and dance, teamwork is crucial. An example of teamwork would be soccer. Teamwork is ideal when it comes to soccer. It gives the ability to trust fellow team members, to take care of other responsibilities. Such as, when there is trust involved in a midfield, defense, and goalie when the opposing team is driving towards your goal. Getting to know team members and trusting them as the season goes on, helps understand and connect with them.…

I'm jet lagged and tired. My alarm goes off, a screeching "beep, beep, beep!" I get out of bed, turn the alarm off, and begin my routine - coffee, shower, flight suit, bag drag from the lobby to the crew bus. Once all bags are loaded onto the airplane, we head over to base operations for our crew brief. Crew brief is complete and its back to the aircraft, so I can refuel, inspect, and then take off. This is my life as a C-17A Flying Crew Chief (FCC) stationed at Travis AFB CA. You're a jack of all trades when you're an FCC. The C-17A is a large military transport aircraft. It performs strategic airlift missions, and transports troops and cargo throughout the world. When on these types of missions, I'm usually gone from one to two weeks depending on whats going on in the world. There was a mission that took us from California to South Carolina to pick up Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. We crew rested there before we started our…

Firstly, I learned that I might not be as unique as I have always presumed I was. Secondly, I have learned that my work ethic, organizational skills and sense of duty have all been with me for some length of time awaiting cultivation. When finally brought to light, they have brought forth success in my work and home life. Understanding yourself and the challenges that await you are ideal, no, necessary for proper growth and expansion both in life and at work. Lastly, it has put me in a position where I can realize what my tendencies are, the psychology behind them and how to deal with them in an appropriate and adult way. Second, the necessity of team work was instilled within me. I’ve learned that as a whole we are much more than what an individual could hold. One may look at me as I toss a six foot flag into the air and say, “Yeah, that’s pretty cool.”, but if we cooperate with each other I could spin through the drum line into the toss and make the crowd catch their breath in anticipation. I was also taught the downfalls of not working together…

By completing my Senior Project, I developed so much personal satisfaction from this experience. I feel much more confident when presenting in front of an audience. I have found myself able to share information without having to read from a stack of notecards. Being able to do this was quite a “stretch” for me as I often become nervous in front of a group of people. This project taught me that sharing something I really believe in will help me become a very good…

Overall I think the biggest takeaway I have from this experience is how to articulate your ideas and provide evidence. I have only ever done experiments where there is a definitive right or wrong answer. In this research, there is a little bit of a grey area as long as you are able to adequately defend your answer and communicate it to others. However, there are still some answers that are absolutely incorrect. Another skill I was able to further develop is how to respectfully disagree. I love debating with people so I have really enjoyed talking about differences in results with fellow…

Some new information that I learned was that you have to be equal to others at all times and that you should know what you’re going to say. Also that you should do all of your work before presenting. My favorite part of these projects was presenting my civilization to others because I felt like my group did a great job. In the other project thinking of what food we were going to make if we won because who doesn’t like to think about what they’re going to eat? It’s okay to work in groups because you get more ideas quicker and it’s not always okay because some people like to argue a lot. I built through communication, collaboration, critical thinking, writing scripts/speeches, and my presenting skills/ delivering speeches…
