English: More than Letters

As a freshman in college, many of the subjects I’ve taken up in the first semester are not new to me. I took Algebra, Biology, and even Filipino, but my English class is of an entirely different context. College English for me is unfamiliar. For example, I was never required to write essays on a weekly basis and be graded for it. I always took the kind of English class that we always just used to talk about novels. Nevertheless, throughout the first semester, I’ve learned a lot from my English class specifically, the noteworthiness of a scratch paper in essay writing, organizing my thoughts, and writing from the heart, rather than writing to pass.

In English 1 I learned getting to the point of my essays the hard way, I was forced to learn the significant use of a scratch paper. For example, I was not always used to writing my essays in a scratch paper, I always just thought about what I would say in my head hence, I tend to beat around the bush often. In my English class, our professor required us to submit our scratch papers along with our essays, with this I was forced to include my thoughts in my scratch paper and rewrite. It was a hard habit to learn, but as I’m writing one of my final essays now, all the writing and rewriting made it worth it.

I also learned an important skill in English 1 that I can use not only in essay writing, but also in my daily activities. I have acquired the skill of organizing my thoughts. For instance, writing an essay outline. I have always thought that writing an essay was about whatever-comes-to-mind type of process, but in my English class I learned that before I can write an interesting essay, I have to make an outline first. True enough, my first attempt to make an outline was a disaster. It was harder than it seemed to be, but with limitless patience and a ton of practice I am now able to organize my thoughts first, put them into writing,

Arguably the most important skill that I have learned is that it is essential to plan my essays. Prior to this class, I would just write all of my thoughts down without creating an outline. After that, I would just briefly proofread my essay and that was my final copy. Now, I make sure I spend a decent amount of time on an outline and make it incredibly detailed so that my thoughts are all in line with each other and overall, the essay makes sense. Then, I will read over my rough draft multiple times and have other people proofread it as well, just to make sure that it makes sense and is as clear as it can be. My papers went from taking less than an hour to write to taking 2 or 3 hours at the least.…

Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday I trudge up two flights of stairs with the wind whipping at my face as my fingers feverishly click out the final text message I need to send before class starts. I walk into the warm, musty computer lab and sit at my usual spot with the view of the library through the tree limbs. I am always sure to come to English class because I know of my terrible history in this subject area. I have always struggled with English and before this semester had assumed that the college level class would be the death of me. As I read over the syllabus for this class it states that we will learn to understand writing assignments as a series of tasks and develop flexible strategies for generating, revising, editing, and proof-reading the assigned papers. I shuddered at the sheer thought of having to write five papers. Narrative, Evaluation, Profile, Position. These words might as well have been written in another language because I had no idea how to differentiate between them. Despite my fears, I believe this semester’s English 101 course has truly helped me develop my writing skills and advance to a more capable writer.…

Freshman Composition has done so much for me academically. In previous years I have had to do little to no writing and even when we did there were no rules or writing process we had to follow. This class has built a great basis for me, towards my academic future. I do realize that I am far away from being even an average writer, but I enjoy and accept that challenge to myself on becoming a competent writer. Parts of my writing, that still need to work are my introductions and sentence fluency. While I believe that my strong suits are, that once I get past my obstacles of writing that I have the potential to write something that will make a difference, other than that all my skills are still very raw. I’ve learned many things during EN101, the…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

The English 3003 class has helped me in various ways in improving and shaping my writing skills. Although some of the work were tedious and sometimes frustration at times, but overall it was a fun class to be in and was a great learning experience as well. I had to take this class not because I failed to secure an 8 in the WST test but because I had problems mainly due to my poor writing. Throughout the class this quarter I experienced many methods and different types of writings and essays. The writing homework took time, and several ideas and sometimes google searches to make it a good essay I can score marks on, but in return, I learned skills and techniques…

Can you remember what your teacher taught you back in kindergarten? Chances are she was introducing you to the basics of reading and writing. Literacy is the ability to read and write, and because I did not think I was very good at either of the two, it had never been my favorite thing to do. It wasn’t until my senior year of high school that I had an English class that I actually enjoyed. My teacher was Ms. Holly Eubanks. The past classes had boasted about how good of a teacher Ms. Eubanks was and how, even though she may take a while to grade your papers, she was always trying to help you improve in every possible way she could. On the first day I learned that Ms. Eubanks happened to quite attractive as well, which made it a little easier to pay attention in class. She had blonde hair, green eyes, a fit physique, and she had a very caring and considerate personality which helped her talk to her students and give them confidence in her class. Before taking the class, I knew from her former students that her biggest essay was the one thousand-word “Senior Reflection” that she had us write for our final. Ms. Eubanks’s essay just so happened to be the single most important project that changed my outlook on literacy forever.…

Essay writing was a major part of the class. We wrote essay on race and ethnicity, gay matters, language technique essays. Each essay taught us about a different style or form of writing. Comparison and contrast essays taught us how to write an essay comparing two similar things. This type of essay was my favorite to write. In my essay I compared the careers of Lebron James and Kobe Bryant. The most difficult essay for me to write was the argument essay in which we were to defend a point using strong argument skills. For my argument essay I supported the argument that rap music is music of resistance. I can honestly say my essay skills have improved tremendously over the course of this year thanks to the many skills learned in this class.…
