Consumer Viewing Habits of India in 2019
“The science of today is the technology of tomorrow”, as put by Edward Teller. 5 years down the lane, we would not see a vibrant change in the viewing habits of Indians but a bold and a strong modification & a continuation of what is going on in the present. Of course, science has bought half of the world into the digitalization mode. Let us view now how this “viewing” of TV would take us in future.
Television was always our partner in crime and joy, it was a personification in the form of a mother, teacher, lover as at every point of time, it taught us something or the other from it. It continues to hold our attention for two reasons even today. Firstly because of the quality and choice of content, secondly because a huge range of interfaces have evolved to suit every taste and lifestyle of different cultures.
We can easily control how and when we watch TV by creating our own TV schedules from the abundance of content available, or tuning in on a mobile device. We have more choice than ever before. Consumer viewing habits now involve so much more than just the living room TV and traditional broadcast services. Today people take their entertainment wherever they want. Digitalization took its colour, IPTV, usage of social media and Internet based connections changed the habits of all the consumers in terms of viewership (If looked from back). Now this will seek a hike in growth in the next coming years as the engrossment & engagement in it would seek more highlights.
We’re no longer just consumers of TV - we are becoming the masters of our own choice. 2012 was considered as the landmark year of TV for various new booms like the final switch from analogue to digital and the launch of newer services such as internet and mobile TV, this change is still continuing & would continue to exist as India would see a change in economies, lifestyle and mentality.
This change in viewing points out to the consumer’s ideology of

    Television is one of the biggest sources of entertainment we use today. From gossip, news, sports, or other relatable topics, it has provided avid watchers with something to look forward to watch every day. An American farmer by the name of Philo Farnsworth broke through the barrier of this invention by putting all the pieces together from other inventers with the same idea. These people include, Paul Nipkow, who invented the first rotating disk that would allow pictures to transmit over to wire; John Baird invented the first pictures in motion that were televised in Europe; Charles Jenkins who invented a mechanical television that he called “radiovision”, that transmitted the first moving images; and Vladimir Zworykin who invented the Cathode Ray tube which transformed the television into an electronic device. People were excited about the upbringing of televisions but also feared the new technology. People thought that televisions could transmit personal conversations onto the TV. Looking at how the television was modeled when it was first being made until now shows the dramatic change in America’s technological society. The use of television has become so popular over the years from when it was invented (1928) until now because it has become more accessible and more cultured into everyday life. The stereotypical view on television now a day is that guys watch the sports and woman watch the soaps. The development of the different channels and shows and productions has become a phenomenal breakthrough in the way people use this as a source of entertainment. Ericsson became aware of this evolution early on. We have studied how people consume TV since 2004. The 2011 TV and Video Consumer Trend Report is based on both quantitative and qualitative research methods. More than 13,000 interviews, representing the opinions of 400 million consumers, were conducted in June– August 2011 in 13 countries: the US, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Spain, Sweden, Russia, South Korea, China, Taiwan, Brazil and Australia. This quantitative approach was complemented by 22 in-depth, in-home interviews with families in three countries: Germany, Sweden and the US.
