What Will Happen When You Put Zinc In Copper II Sulfate
Chemistry Lab Report
(Redox Reactions)
Questions:
• What will happen when you put zinc in copper II sulfate?
• What will happen when you put copper in copper II sulfate?
Predictions:
• We can predict that zinc will react with the aqueous solution of copper II sulfate and we will notice a reaction. We can also predict that the copper will not react with the solution of copper II sulfate and no reaction will be noticed.
Hypothesis:
• It is hypothesized the zinc metal will have a precipitation reaction with the solution of copper II sulfate, because zinc is more reactive then copper and it could displace the copper ions from the solution (CuSO4). And because of that there is no reaction between copper and the solution of copper II sulfate.
Materials: Apparatus:
Copper II sulfate Spot Plate
Copper Wire Beaker
Zinc Spoon
Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Paper Towels
Waste Petri Dish Gloves Lab Coat Safety Googles Pipettes Forceps Spatula

Procedure:

Then put zinc in the first spot and copper in the second one. Then put sodium chloride in both of the spots. After that agitate the zinc in the solution of Copper II sulfate. Use a spoon to take out both the zinc and the copper and put the zinc in a petri dish and the zinc in a 500 ml. beaker. Lastly put everything in a waste beaker where it could be safely disposed and wash the left apparatus.
Observations:
• It is noticed that the solution of zinc and Copper II sulfate does not react until sodium chloride I added. After the sodium chloride is added it is noticed that the zinc forms little spiked around it, which when we agitated forms sludge. While the reaction of the Copper II sulfate and the zinc happen we notice that the solution of copper and Copper II sulfate does not change even after we add sodium chloride. The solution of zinc and Copper II sulfate starts losing its color. Bubbles form around the zinc.

In this experiment, we took a look at how copper (Cu0) reacts with different substances to get an end result where it is transformed back to its original state. There were five different reactions that involved copper. We first experimented with copper metal and converted it to copper (II) nitrate. We then converted copper (II) nitrate to copper (II) hydroxide. Next, we converted copper (II) hydroxide to copper (II) oxide. After that, out next conversion was from copper (II) oxide to copper (II) sulfate. Our last conversion was from copper (II) sulfate back to a copper metal.…
