What Was The Importance Of The First Amendment
The First Amendment states “ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.“ This amendment prohibits the government from making a national religion as well as protecting those who practice any religion from Christianity to Judaism. This amendment was written on June 7, 1789 and ratified December 15, 1791. James Madison, include an attribute said “ The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established, nor shall the full and equal rights of conscience be in any manner, or on any pretence, infringed.'' Freedom of Religion was important to our Founding Fathers. In Britain there was a lot of Religious Persecution in the 19th century. Many people were executed for practicing a religion other than Protestant. Clearly our founding fathers knew that something was wrong with that. It gives all citizens rights not controlled by the government. This amendment allows all citizens to practice any religion they would like to or no religion at all. We as American people are not confined to one religion. America truly is a melting pot of many different people with many different religious views. I've learned however that we didn't always give everyone their mandatory rights. Native Americans didn't get their religious right until 1978. This was years after the First Amendment was ratified. America is a very different place than it used to be. Now every citizen has their religious freedom. I think this is so fundamentally important because religion is a way people express themselves. It's a way people have communities and celebration. Religion is so important and valuable in the American society, and it's amazing that everyone has the freedom and choice to practice any religion they
