What Was Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement?
Imagine having to run 420 miles in the dark and the cold. That is what Harriet Tubman’s life was like for 11 years of her life. Harriet Tubman was born in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her original birth name was Araminta Ross and she was born into slavery. In 1844, she married a free black man named John Tubman. This led to her changing her name to the name we all know as Harriet Tubman. Harriet then got fed up with all of this slave work and she escaped from Bucktown, Maryland to Philadelphia in 1849. What was Harriet Tubman’s Greatest Achievement? I believe that conducting on the Underground Railroad was Harriet Tubman’s greatest achievement, even though she was a spy, nurse, and even a caregiver. (Doc D) Harriet didn’t get paid when she was in the army so she had to bake pies, make gingerbread, and stew up root beer to sell to make money. She would get no sleep and would have to do the same thing every day. Doc D: I think this is important because she cared about others before she cared about herself. Harriet Tubman is also a caregiver. She would take in helpless people, the elderly, and the disabled. She would take care of them until they were adults and could live independently. (Doc E) She would house 6 to 8 people at a time and she did this for 48 years of her life or basically until she died. Doc E: I think this is impressive because she did this for almost half her life. Harriet's other achievement was that she was a spy for the army. Her main focus was to free slaves and gather information on opposing people in the war. (Doc C) She then started a raid on June 2, 1862, which involved 3 gunboats, and was led by black troops and a white officer. (Doc C) This is brave because this was very risky and she was putting a lot of people's lives at risk during this
