What Remains Book Report
Another book that we have to read together as a class, ugh. Class readings were never a passion of mine, but Strength in What Remains was something different. The story of a young man escaping genocide, boarding a plane, and becoming a successful person in New York City amazed me. Which made me think; if he had people in his life which made a difference, are there inspirational people who pushed and influenced me? Little did I know that there were so many more people who impacted me than I thought. Family is the key part in my life and I feel as though they made the most impact and have pushed me forward the most. From when I was little my parents were always trying to teach me the difference between right and wrong, which consequently led me to a well-trained conscience. I was able to make decisions regarding what was right and wrong, even when I was just an itty bitty little child. It led me to choose who I should hang out with, and what activities I should and should not engage in. A disciplined conscience ultimately led up to me getting pushed in the direction of being my true self. Along with choices I made and the conscience in the back of my mind, …show more content…
I feel as though this is one of the most important things in my life. All the credits have to go to my grandparents for this. They raised children who are very strong in their faith and wanted to pass it on to their children. Sure, I still get confused sometimes, but I know I can get questions answered. Questions all started when I was a young child. Every few months my grandparents on my dad’s side would have us come over and have dinner with them, so we could talk and see what was going on in each other’s life. After lunch my grandma would have on of the grandchildren read a Bible story. These stories were the ones that engaged my mind and helped me to think. Not to mention that they also made me more curious about the

A couple of years ago I read a book called Unwind. This book, written by Neal Shusterman, is about a boy that runs from his family. He ran from his family after they signed a contract to have his body harvested. Being “unwound” happened to be a decision that the parents made. Connor’s parents signed a contract without him knowing. After he found the papers in a drawer, he ran away to save his life. Throughout the book, Connor endures many challenges. His mental stamina allows him to outsmart juvey cops, or police that looked for runaway unwinds. He meets many people, but few become his companions. Unwind is a book that I relate to in unique ways.…

During the Sierra Leone Civil War that started on March 23, 1991, the eleven-year armed conflict caused the displacement of many citizens and the conscription of child soldiers. The novel A Long Way Gone, shows the memoir of Ishmael Beah’s childhood during the violent years of the war. Throughout the story the author Beah embodies the loss of innocence in many parts of his early life. Survival is a skill everyone’s born with but not many have to test it. In the memoir of Ishmael Beah, A Long Way Gone, he travels across the Sierra Leone bush to get away from the Revolutionary United Front(RUF) that is attacking his home village. Melissa Fay Greene from the Elle Magazine writes, “No outsider could have written this book, and it’s hard to imagine that many insiders could do so with such acute vision, stark language, and tenderness. It is a heartrending achievement.” This really sums up the feeling of the memoir, it tells a true story of how hard it is to stay alive. Ishmael Beah strives to keep his companions and family safe even if he has to do the things he disrespects.…

My family defines who I am as a person because they are my backbone and the reason why I strive to do my best. My mother’s family has sheltered me ever since I was born they were there for me when I had nobody. Generally I was unwanted by my other side of family, but my mother’s family never neglected me, they have made my life very easy and guided. In my understanding the reason why I said they are my backbone is because as a child( Baby) I had nothing and I was seriously ill but they never abounded me. My grandparents also went far distance into the village to find a cure to my illness and my aunties & uncle used their dorm room bed sheet as a cloth for me. This is why I appreciate everything in my life because I was a nobody as a baby.…

Families assist in your development over the lifespan. No matter what the situation is, your family is always there to support you through your journey. Though, just because they stick by your side, does not mean it is in a positive manner. It may mean they are just doing their job, following the rest of society to create an image of the perfect family, which may never exist. Though in order to maintain a healthy family, you must respect their beliefs and values.…

My first reason why family is important to my life is because they have always been there for me. Many of my peers succeed at certain sports or even various classes like English or Calculus. Although, I did struggle with my other activities and curriculum classes, family has always been there. Throughout middle school and high school, I competed with my friend for captain of the soccer team. I didn’t beat him until eighth grade when my hard work finally paid off. Because of this, I now realize how dedication and persistence can help someone achieve one’s goals. If I never decided to join the soccer team and compete for first captain, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to challenge myself and gain the skills and characteristics that would benefit me throughout the rest of my life, if it had not been for my family pushing me to excel.…

I believe that the rest of my story might vary slightly from others, starting at a very early age. As my little sister was born just 2 years after me, our lives took a dramatic change. She was born without a pulmonary artery which demanded immediate open heart surgery and weeks and months of subsequent hospitalization. In spite of all doctor's prognoses, she became a miracle. Even in my early years I remember the first night she came home, wrapped in a Christmas blanket. The challenges issued by her health then and in following years were a proving ground for my family, and as a result the rule of my family and my life has been, "Family First".…

My family environment has influenced me a lot especially when my siblings were born. I am the oldest out of five, so I'm always look up to. I always had to make a good example and never show that I was scared. When my mom and stepdad had to work, I would take care of them until they came back while getting my schoolwork and practicing my instrument done too. I never really had a chance to be a kid, I always had to be a mother to my siblings. I would always wish for more time in the day for myself, Although watching them grow up from when they were small and started school for the first time made up for that loss time. I live up to a quote, "Be the master of your future, not the slave of your problems." My senior year I had to stop being…

In my family, I have a brother that has autism with ADHD that can’t communicate with us, a dad and an aunt that have to go to dialysis three times a week, a mom that has had several surgeries in the past for having stomach cysts, several other aunts and uncles that have Type 2 diabetes, and a grandmother I was really close with who died from lung cancer. Growing up in a catholic school, going to church, and being surrounded by Christians has greatly impacted my life. Not noticing it much before, I now see how the majority of the people in my life consider faith the key to a successful life. Additionally, the only way to understand your faith is by reading the Bible. Not only had my parents encouraged me to read the Bible, but those of all different generations around me. My friend Christine, who is thirteen years old, agrees with my mother who is in her forties, and my grandparents who are in their seventies and eighties. I received the chance to ask them personally if they think reading the Bible is important, if they read the Bible, and their favorite Bible stories and lessons. Likewise, I got the chance to do so to myself.…
