What Makes A Good Dancer Essay

Martha Gram, Fred Astaire, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Michael Jackson. These names are staples of the dance world, known for their astonishing way of performance. So what makes these historical dancers so good? During their time periods Martha Gram and Michael Jackson became entities like no other, breaking away from the crowd. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Fred Astaire were able to morph into masters of their styles of dance. It is my sole belief that versatility is what makes a “good” dancer. Versatility by definition is capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor. In provisions of dance this signifies the ability to be skillful in more than one area of the subject.

Every day a dancer goes through a struggle with their main tool, our paintbrush through which art is created, our body. A superior dancer is one who has a versatile body, and a sound body image. Each day we look in the mirror and analyze the image reflected back, often times picking ourselves apart and looking for all that we don’t have, a perfect body. "We always want what other people have." Says Elizabeth Parkinson. Time and time again we hear of the horror stories, promising young dancers starving themselves to fit the ballet worlds “you can never be too thin” expectations, or the extreme measures pupils take to reach the goals set for them.

This monster with florescent red eyes is created by the world around us. Not only does the media push for the idea of the only way to be considered beautiful in the eyes of others is to be stick thin, but the values of the world around a child are imbedded deep into the crevices of the developing mind. My personal belief is that there is no such thing as the “perfect” body, it is simply a myth created by the insecurities brought on by the need to be accepted.
