What Makes An American
Travis Hughes

What Is an American? What do you think makes an American an American? An american is someone who was born and/or raised in America, has been influenced by American culture, who feels
“a part” of America. Its certain characteristics that set us apart from other countries.
Americans are selfreliant, competitive, and the compassion we bring to others are some, of many, American characteristics that set us apart. To have pride in your country, its history, and achievements is a true American citizen. It would be hard to get narrower on the definition, simply for the fact that America is so diverse and does not constitute a single culture, religion, race, or ethnicity.
An
American is someone who has lived here long enough that they feel a part of this country and associate with others that live here and they have some level of pride about being American. Americans have this constant drive, this desire, to be better than anyone else in so many things such as sports events, business, or even education.
Americans show their competitive side through the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc.
Competitiveness stands out more in our country than in other cultures.
Part of what makes someone an American is our legal right to question the government. Thomas Jefferson stated "that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical." If we do not question and challenge our government, then we will no longer live in America as we know it. I believe if a person has lived here most of their life, knows little of their previous country, and are making something of themselves in this country, then they are

as much American as anyone born here! An American is a person who loves the country and is willing to do anything for it. In conclusion, being an American is someones personal choice. If a person chooses not to call themselves American, but instead the ethnicity from where they originally came from, then that’s up to them. Anyone who wakes up early in the morning to go work is contributing to America by helping America expand and grow larger.
President Barack Obama said, “What makes someone an American isn't just blood or birth but allegiance to our founding principles and faith in the idea that anyonefrom anywherecan write the next chapter of our story.”

When asked the question “what is an american?”, almost every single person would provide a different answer. This question is very open ended, and there are infinite possibilities for a response. Being an american is not something that can be decided by a few physical criterion, it is something more. To be an american is, according to Patricia Fernandez, “a state of mind,” based on a person’s beliefs rather than their tangible features. Therefore, I believe that an American is someone who considers America to be their home, believes in freedom and equality for all people regardless of race, social status, gender, or ethnicity, and is loyal and supportive to the United States.…

Although some americans take for granted the oppertunities at hand, there have been several historical figures that know the true meaning of being apart of the United States. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, former president of the united states, said, "My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." He also said, "The cost of freedom is always high, but Americans have always paid it. And one path we shall never choose, and that is the path of surrender, or submission." Kennedy understood the true honor of what being an american is. There have been other presidents who know it too, such as Theodore Roosevelt. He stated, "I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit.” Even before America was formed, there were still people who dreamed of peace and equality. The men who put their lives on the line in order to accomplish their goals of having a country free of slavery and unjust treatment believed in their cause and in their leaders. George Washington, the general who lead the american revolution and the first president of the united states made a speech saying, "Our cruel and unrelenting Enemy leaves us no choice but a brave resistance, or the most abject submission; this is all we can expect - We have therefore to resolve to conquer or die: Our own Country's Honor, all call upon us for a vigorous and manly exertion, and if we now shamefully fail, we shall become infamous to the whole world. Let us therefore rely upon the goodness of the Cause, and the aid of the supreme Being, in whose hands Victory is, to animate and encourage us to great and noble Actions - The Eyes of all our Countrymen are now upon us, and we shall have their blessings, and praises, if happily we are the instruments of saving them from the Tyranny meditated against them. Let us therefore animate and encourage each…

Americans are inclined to freedom and with that freedom, have the ability to create infinite opportunities for themselves, which then allow them to find success, happiness, and prosperity. Americans can find these opportunities because they live in a meritocracy, and are provided with rights and freedoms that come from The Constitution of the United States of America. The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments of the constitution, are a significant portion of rights that give Americans their freedom. Some of these rights include, the freedom of speech, religion, right to bare arms, the right to equal justice and right to own private property.
