What It Means To Be Catholic Essay
What does it mean to be a Catholic in contemporary society? To be Catholic means to be whole, one with society, and having absolute faith in God. Today in the 21st century there are about 1.2 billion Catholics and with the growing population, we will build up in capacity. Catholicism itself is based on obeying and believing in God’s grace. It is based on the teachings and beliefs of the Church. We believe that God is one God in three divine persons. Catholics today find the explanation and desire in Jesus Christ, our savior that was sent by God for salvation. We were made in the image and likeness of God. As Catholics we shall thrive as he did and be one, holy, apostolic Church.
The Blessed or Holy Trinity is a big part of Catholic lives. This is one God in three persons which is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy spirit. We believe in this powerful spirit that came to Jesus at Pentecost. At Confirmandi we receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit as well as renew our baptismal promises. Confirmand are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and are anointed with chrism. The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit which are piety, wisdom, …show more content…
This means we were made to be comparative human beings. “Made in the image of God” means man and woman were made to be in relationship. Having the likeness of God means we resemble him. As Catholics we live by the four marks the Church which is one, holy, apostolic, Catholic Church. Like the Gospel writers, there are four important characteristics of the Church. On the fifth day of creation God decided to make man and living creatures. “Then God said: Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the tame animals, all the wild animals, and all the creatures that crawl on the earth.     Peter teaches us, followers of Christ, key things to truly follow Christ. In 1 Peter, he stresses that Christians are to be God 's obedient children, "chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, God 's own people" (1:14). Us as Christians are striving to be a “human-like” Jesus if you will. We are God’s people on Earth doing his work for the work of Him. One example of a true believer is that you have encountered the true and living God and that you have undergone a change in your heart and soul.     During the 16th century, Protestantism emerged as a new sect of Christianity. This process was not calm or peaceful in the slightest.     People who are raised Catholic, would know what I mean when I say most parents of newborns will have their babies baptized into the faith very young, probably within the first 6 months after birth. I was a late bloomer. When I was 6 years old, my grandparents gained full custody of me, and being that my mother had never done anything to introduce me into the family's religion, my grandparents did not waste any time in having me baptized. Being that I was not baptized until I was six, I immediately had to take Sunday school classes for my First Reconciliation and my First Holy Communion. When I was in second grade I was already altar server, which was not an opportunity for kids until they were in fifth grade. Grade school kids who were altar servers helped with simple duties during mass such as processing in with candles, holding the prayer book for the priest to read from, etc. As a kid, I placed a lot of importance on my faith; it was really all I had. My mother was a drug addict and had left me alone worrying about what she was doing days at a time, so then my grandparents came to my rescue.
