What Is To Be An American
The traditional concept of being an American is to be a citizen of the United States of America; however, I prefer the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of the word American, which is “a person born, raised, or living in the United States.” This definition more accurately captures the true idea behind what it is to be an American in a number of ways. The first is the fact that it does not include being a citizen, which pays heed to the origins of America where people were seeking out a new land, one of opportunity and freedom, the first people to pursue the American Dream. Today the idea of being American is too often skewed with being a super patriotic “true blooded American,” which is used as justification for chastising the “unamericans,”

When asked the question “what is an american?”, almost every single person would provide a different answer. This question is very open ended, and there are infinite possibilities for a response. Being an american is not something that can be decided by a few physical criterion, it is something more. To be an american is, according to Patricia Fernandez, “a state of mind,” based on a person’s beliefs rather than their tangible features. Therefore, I believe that an American is someone who considers America to be their home, believes in freedom and equality for all people regardless of race, social status, gender, or ethnicity, and is loyal and supportive to the United States.…

What does it mean to be an American, to me it means that I have certain rights and freedoms that nobody can take away from me unless I deserve them to be taken. Most people believe that being an american means that you can get away with doing whatever you want because they have freedom of speech or the rights to do it, but sometimes those rights don’t apply and to me that seems like they are just trying to take advantage of what everyone believes what being an American means. Being an American means that you have more privileges than most countries do and people take that for granted.…

That is the epitome of being an American, putting others before yourself. You can serve in our government, helping better our communities and our country. As kids we can serve our country through volunteer work, or even by going to school, learning to become better citizens. I will never forget the way our…

In this day and age, to be American is something frequently mocked. With all the stereotypes, it makes us wonder what it truly means to be American. Does it mean to be fat and unhealthy? Greedy and demanding? Racist and Harsh? This is the brand we are all marked with as a whole nation, but I reject these labels. To be an American is something we should be proud of. By the definition I see, it is something to be proud of, even in the darkest and harshest of times when we do things we will never forgive; these are just mistakes that many make, and it shouldn't deter us from taking pride in morals this country holds.…

All Americans are guaranteed equal justice. They are allowed equal justice because America is a free country. Americans are inclined to freedom and with that freedom, have the ability to create infinite opportunities for themselves, which then allow them to find success, happiness, and prosperity. Americans can find these opportunities because they live in a meritocracy, and are provided with rights and freedoms that come from The Constitution of the United States of America. The Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments of the constitution, are a significant portion of rights that give Americans their freedom. Some of these rights include, the freedom of speech, religion, right to bare arms, the right to equal justice and right to own private property. They also to enjoy many other freedoms such as raising a family, traveling anywhere in the U.S., having the freedom to receive a free education, and work at any job for which a citizen can qualify. Through these freedoms Americans are able to pursue careers in anything that gratifies them, practice any religion they believe in, and being able to protect themselves from harm with the right to bare arms. This allows them the opportunity of living a life of happiness and success, all because they have the freedom to do so. Americans ability to embrace their freedom, use it for the better of the world, and to prosper in whatever they choose to pursue, is the meaning of what it means to be an American.…

What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…

Many people come to the United States to attain their dreams and, at some point, earn the title of an American. It is a term that is thrown around often, but do we honestly know the true meaning? Recently, the entire nation has become divided over what it means to live and be a part of America. Therefore, as a writer for the Washington Post stated, “If we can’t agree on what being “American” really means, it’s going to be very hard to find common ground on anything else” (Cillizza). The term American is an abstract idea and cannot be completely defined. There are many elements to consider because everyone is different, but that is what makes America so special. It is home to a very diverse nation. The meaning behind being an American can be…

The very definition of American can be disputed by people of different nationalities. The accepted school of thought is if one is born in the United States or naturalized through a set process, they are an American. To begin with, the United States has had a functioning government for no more than two hundred and forty years. Every modern American prior to becoming a proper “American” held another nationality. But it is not only the technical terms that separate Americans and non Americans, it is also their ideology. Differences in ideology differ of course on a person to person basis, but it also differs in regions of the country. Some ideas that might be fine with one American might seem un- American to another and vice versa. To be an American, one has to commit to a political ideology pertaining to liberty, equality, and democracy. A true American is somebody that believes in basic American principles in addition to holding a legal American status.…

American writings have portrayed numerous ideologies of what it means to be an American and these ideals have transcended throughout time and can clearly be depicted by the major influential literary aspirants from each century. The one thing that remains the same is that it has always been a struggle to forge a truly "American" identity given the fact that our nation is one of immigrants. These early works reached the level of literature, as in the robust and perhaps truthful account of his adventures by many literary aspirants such as: Thomas Jefferson, William Bradford, Crevecoeur, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Through the tendentious journalistic accounts as directed by the edification of these credited writers, the identity of these writers can clearly be depicted through their doctrine.…
