In many stories, it is obvious that some heroes face more difficult challenges than others. In the book “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton, Odysseus has a more difficult time being the hero than Theseus. Although Theseus and Odysseus have difficult time being the hero, Theseus practically displays the life of a hero as somewhat simple. During the myths “Theseus” and “The Adventures of Odysseus”, the protagonists show that the life of a hero is difficult because one must be determined and never give up. Theseus and Odysseus also demonstrate that to be a hero, one must be willing to risk everything. In the book “Mythology”, Edith Hamilton proves that it is difficult to be a hero.…

On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…

My definition of a hero is someone who puts themselves last and tries to make sure who they care about the most is okay. Based on my definition, I would say that Telemachus is a hero. Telemachus puts his mother and father before himself throughout the whole story. You can tell he cares about Odysseus because he travels miles and miles around to try and get some information on his well being. He cares for penelope by trying his best to rid his household of the suitors. Another way he cares for penelope is by trying to find out if Odysseus is alive so she can either marry a suitor or wait for his return. Lastly, he shows his loyalty to odysseus even though he’s not there by using some of his virtues.…

Theseus as depicted in Mary Renault’s modern adaptation of Greek myth The King Must Die is the epitome of a Greek hero of time immemorial, and would be proclaimed a hero even today despite his flaws. Many of the reasons that he was a hero to the Greeks is part of what makes him a hero to modern day society; he has a strong sense of moral right and cannot stand for injustice thus striving to change it wherever he finds it. He is also strong, clever, and a man of the people. Yet it is not his physical aspects of strength, nor mental prowess or cunning that make him a hero by modern standards, instead it is his flaws that make him a true hero.…
