Woman’s Missionary Union

The Woman’s Missionary Union was formed in 1888 by a group of women for the purpose of stimulating the missionary spirit and the grace of giving. The woman behind the effort to establish a sense of mission in people was Annie Walker Armstrong (1850-1938). After the establishment of the WMU, she served tirelessly as corresponding secretary for eight years and this was before the age of computer-generated letters.

The WMU focus is on missions of many different varieties falling under their definition of missions, which is:

Missions is the work of God through the church by which the gospel of Jesus Christ is extended in word and deed to all people in the world.

That is a pretty big area to cover, but we all know if you want a monumental job done - give it to a woman. Women know their strength lies in the Lord and they are not afraid to ask for directions.

The WMU goal is to involve all ages in missions of all kinds to share the gospel and minister to others. To do this the WMU provides missions resources consisting of: inspiring conferences, ministry ideas, volunteer opportunities, mentoring models, prayer strategies, curriculum for age-level organizations, resource kits, books, videos and leadership training.

WMU Foundation Supports the cause of Christ by assisting WMU as well as individuals who faithfully support WMU. It is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) corporation making all gifts tax deductible. Its purpose it to facilitate the making of donations for the advancement of WMU missions projects and programs. It receives the gifts for the benefit of WMU. WMU is entirely self-sustaining and does not receive funds from the SBC.

WMU sponsored organizations are: Women on Mission, Adults on Mission, Youth on Mission, Acteens, Girls in Action, Children in Action, and Mission Friends. New Hope Publishing and Liveway Christian Stores are the publishers and primary outlets for the Christian material distributed. WMU has 14
