Renaissance: * The Renaissance was a cultural movement that profoundly affected European intellectual life. * It began in Italy and spread its way across the rest of Europe. * It lasted from the end of the fourteenth century to the early sixteenth century (1375-1527). * This renaissance was significant for many reasons, one of which was the use of vernacular language. * The use of vernacular language helped people understand and rationalize ideas. * Another reason why the Renaissance was significant was due to humanists recovering classic knowledge, such as Plato, and languages. * Humanists also set cultural and educational reforms throughout Europe in this time period. * A major invention that helped move

Jacob Burckhardt’s Thesis and Criticisms: * Jacob Burckhardt was a historian, mainly of art and culture. * He viewed the renaissance as a split between the medieval to the new, modernized era. * Some major changes that he used to support his thoughts were the revival of ancient learning, new secular values, and new scientific values which began to question traditional religious beliefs. * Most scholars agree that the Renaissance was a time of transition from medieval world to modern world. However, others disagree stating that his description is too modernizing and point out that he has overlooked the continuity between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. * Jacob Burckhardt’s thesis and criticisms were viewed throughout the Italian Renaissance.
