“Queen Elizabeth’s Televised Speech” –September 5, 1997 The purpose of this speech is to evoke sympathy from the audience. Queen Elizabeth recognizes that her audience are millions of British families. The queen uses a persona of a grieving family member, so her audience can easily sympathize with her. The queen’s purpose is effective because she knew how to establish a persona that the audience would react positively to.

    In the speech, Queen Elizabeth illustrates a confident tone using diction. Diction is the choice of words an author uses. For example, Queen Elizabeth states “Let tyrants fear, I have always so behaved myself that, under god, I have placed my chiefest strength and safeguard in the loyal heart and good will of subjects.” In this quote the Queen shows the difference between her as a leader and that of a tyrant. Unlike tyrants who don’t care or trust their subjects, she and her subjects have a bond. She uses the excerpt “under God” to place herself under the higher authority of God, which connects with her beliefs that monarchs are ordained by God and operate under his power. This emphasizes that her authority comes from God, which strengthens her credibility. Also it describes her whole statement. Her strength and safeguard all were done under the eyes of God. The excerpts “chiefest strength” and “let tyrants fear” shows confidence. Confidence typically conveys assurance in one’s own skills, abilities or powers. The Queen shows these things in the excerpts. She uses “cheifest strength” to say that she has placed her main strength and sense of safety in her troops. Free indirect discourse allows the reader to gain access to Elizabeth’s thoughts and share her thought process.     After much convincing, the Queen finally gave a short, dry, televised speech. One might expect the Queen to be heartbroken, after losing the mother of her grandchildren and her daughter in law. The people of the world waited anxiously for a long, charismatic, emotional Eulogy. Instead, they received a heartless, robotic speech read directly from a screen behind the camera. Why, one might ask. Well it was no secret that the Queen envied Diana. The way Diana was so easily loved, appealed to the common people, and showed humanity were qualities Queen Elizabeth struggled to master and led to her removal from the spotlight. It is made evident, in several ways throughout the speech, that Her Majesty could care less about the death of her son’s wife and second choice as a lover. As reading the text, it is easy to realize that she is delivering a very generic, bland speech that could be used for anyone’s death after replacing the name. It’s almost as if she had someone write the speech for her. There are no personal recollections or adjectives she uses to describe Diana’s personality. The closest she comes is when she refers to Diana as an “exceptional and gifted human being.” Any mother or mother in law in that situation would have, at very least, added loving or wonderful or a more personal description to that sentence.
