Celie’s only true family in the beginning of the movie was Nettie. Her two children would have been her family if they weren’t taken away from her. Once Celie and Nettie were separated, Celie had no one to call her family because when she moved to Mr.’s home, he didn’t really want her to be his wife, and the children didn’t love her or think of her as their mother, so she was basically there to be a maid. Shug Avery was the first part of Celie’s family that grew throughout the movie because she was the first to actually care about Celie since Nettie had to leave. Once Harpo grew older and married Sophia, he realized what kind of man his father was and appreciated Celie a little bit more. When Sophia was put in jail for hitting a white man, Celie was left to raise her kids. While Sophia was in jail, she missed a lot of her children’s lives and what happened with those whom she had known. That’s why when she went back to visit for Christmas she said, “I don’t know any of you anymore,” because she didn’t think she belonged, because before she was put in jail her family and friends were so important to her and then she was without them for so long she thought they weren’t her family and friends anymore the same way they were before. Celie’s hopes in the beginning are about her son and daughter; she hopes that they aren’t dead, but are with caring people. Then she hopes that Nettie stays safe when Celie has to leave and can’t protect her from their father anymore. Once Nettie comes to stay with Mr. and Celie, she is soon thrown out by Mr., but Nettie says that nothing can keep her from her sister, which makes Celie hope and wish for Nettie to be with her in some way. She hopes for letters from Nettie all through the movie. Hopes that Shug gives Celie include the hope to leave, to escape Mr. and the hell that she has to live in. When Shug and Celie find the letters from Nettie that Mr. had been hiding for all those years gave Celie hope that her family loved her, that her children knew who she was and that they were safe, and that maybe, one day she would be able to meet them and see Nettie again. By the end of the movie, most of Celie’s hopes came true, she left Mr., she had a family, Nettie came back to her, and she met her son and
