What a f#$&ing week! I can't believe Andy is really gone, I mean, I knew all along with him being part of a gang that he'd get hurt sometimes, but this... it's too much. The Royals are all hastlin' me, it's been real rough. They seem to think that it's my fault Andy's gone, as though if I hadn't sent him for those cigs that it wouldn't have happened. Or that if I was a decent girlfriend that I would have gone with him or that I would have worried about him sooner, before it was too late. It could have happened to any of them, it's not as if they were targeting Andy, it was because he was a Royal that he was attacked... isn't it? Andy's never done anything bad to anyone, he'd get into the rumbles, hurt a few thugs but he never killed anyone, or even hurt someone real bad. If only I could have been down there sooner, he would have had a chance. I just got so caught up about those sluts all over Gary, I honestly forgot about Andy. I was concerned about my brother and the problems that would arouse with his girlfriend, while my boyfriend was lying in an alley, bleeding to death, fighting for life. Some girlfriend I was.…

    6. In the narrative, Andy is part of a gang called the Royals. They are given silk purple jackets for being part of the gang, but the jacket could symbolize much more than being part of a gang. At the beginning, Andy wore the jacket with pride, whenever he wore the jacket he was recognized and “respected.”After a while, Andy finds out the jacket will do more harm than good. On page 199 it says “there had been some sort of pride knowing he was a Royal. Now there was no pride at all.” He thought he ruled the world, but suddenly realized how pathetic he was lying on the sidewalk. He realized the hatred he received because of the jacket, which ultimately led to his demise. When he was lying there bleeding to death; he knew the man who stabbed…

Another alternative to ending his life so abruptly was he could have confided in his therapist. It is his therapists job to try and get Andy to open up and to try to release some grief. When one thinks of a tiger, they normally think of a strong and courageous animal. On the other hand, Andy is the complete opposite. Andy is a weak and cowardice human being. During the novel, Monty shows Andy a picture he drew. In this picture there was a tiger and he had put tears on it. The tiger in this picture is metaphorically representing Andy. Monty said, “Well I drew a picture last week at school, and the teacher wanted to know why I put tears on my tiger. I told her he was sad. Like you get sometimes” (125). As seen from this quote, Monty knew how Andy actually felt. Everyone else in Hazelwood believed that Andy was doing well and improving. Andy was in great depression and only Monty knew that. After Andy committed suicide all of Andy`s pupils called him a coward for killing himself. On page 173, Gerald states, “You`re a coward and a sellout!”; Gerald had his own problems and thought Andy was selfish for killing himself. Although, these people did not know what Andy was going through, he had felt very guilty and was depressed all of the time.…
