What Is The Difference Between Socs And Greasers
Many people think that Socs are different from greasers. Socs are wealthy rich kids who live on the west side of town and like to jump greasers and ride in their mustangs and corvairs. Greasers on the other hand are tuff and ride in souped up cars. They usually carry a switchblade or some other weapon and they are poorer and usually don’t learn as well, plus they put tons of grease in their hair thus the name greasers. Sherri Valance or known as Cherry for her bright red hair is a different type of soc. She doesn’t like the fighting like the other Socs and greasers(pg.45) and she tries to help Ponyboy and his friends out (pg.84). She is cunning, trustworthy and knows that greasers and Socs are all human, that they all watch the same sunset …show more content…
She felt as if it was her fault that Bob was killed and that Johnny and Ponyboy got published in the paper for murder(pg.86). She knew that the Socs were drunk and that Johnny and Pony fought for self-defense. She took full responsibility even though I don’t think it was her fault any of it happened. Cherry was also able to get Dally of her back when they first met in the movie theater(pg.22). Cherry isn’t only cunning but she is also trustworthy.
Cherry’s trustworthy because she doesn’t like the fighting and she tries to help the greasers stop it. She told the greasers that the Socs weren’t bringing any weapons to the rumble and she was right. She didn’t go to visit Johnny in the hospital which ticked Ponyboy off, but she was staying loyal to her boyfriend Bob who Johnny murdered. When Ponyboy told Cherry her his real name she didn’t laugh or make fun of him, she thought it was pretty cool.
In addition, Cherry believes in equality for greasers and Socs, she knows that they all watch the same sunset(pg.40,130). Cherry doesn’t like how they fight amongst themselves and Socs and greasers all have their problems, not just with money(pg.34). She says it’s as if all greasers are bad, same with Soc’s because some of them like to jump greasers while others don’t. Ponyboy is unsure at first but when Cherry gives him examples he kind of changes his mind and Cherry hopes everyone can get

There are many dividing factors in everyday life. From social classes, to political stances. I noticed the difference in their social situations. The greasers feel they have it worse than the socs, coming from broken homes with limited loved ones, aside from each other. The socs, on the other hand, seem to have been born into a silver spoon lifestyls, with luxuries that the greasers never imagined possible for themselves. While the socs may have better living situations, it is apparent to me that everyone gets dealt a bad hand in life at one point or another. The driving force of all conflict between these two parties has always been their differences, when in reality, things are "rough all…

The most important difference is that the Greasers live in poverty, while the Socs are rich and have their perfect little home. Ponyboy says “We’re poorer than the Socs and the middle class.”(Honton 3).This shows that the Greasers are poorer than anybody else. This also shows that the Greasers sometimes can't maintain them selves because they don't have money. Randy tells Ponyboy, “You get a little money an the whole world hates you. (Hinton 117) Some Socs feel like they are judged based off of the actions of others an not individually. Still, they are way more fortunate than the greasers and fail to appreciate what they have. Also, Cherry Valance tells Ponyboy, “ Things are rough all over.” This shows that the Socs believe that they have their own set of problems that the greasers have no idea about. Nevertheless, they do nothing to try and make themselves seem like decent people. The greasers struggle more than the Socs because the greasers are not wealthy like them and they have little, if…

In the Outsiders, What Cherry meant by “Things are rough all over” was that the greasers and socs have different sets of values, and many differences which lead to arguments about who is better. Cherry even stated, “You greasers have different sets of values. You’re more emotional. Were sophisticated- cool to the point of not feeling anything.” (Hinton 38). Neither side can understand the other which leads to the countless arguments and fights between them. The Socs role in society probably causes them to feel as if they are the most powerful and mighty in the town. However, the Greasers aren’t as high up on the social class. They are harassed relentlessly because of their “lowly” lives and they are belittled for the same reason. Cherry said,”We…

He was really able to connect and see that maybe things were similar when he learned that she used to watch the sunset. The sunset is something they both have in common. Before this, everything seemed like it was different for the two groups. This is shown when Sodapop chants a saying when leaving the house for the rumble. “ I am a Greaser. I am a JD and a hood. I blacken the name of our fair city. I beat up people. I rob gas stations. I am a menace to society. Man, do I have fun!” (Hinton 136) This chant begins a game in which Darry and Two-Bit pretend to be Socs. This lets them get their excitement out for the rumble, but also shows how aware they are of what society thinks of them. Although not all stereotypes placed on them are true, they take pride in knowing that they are different and love themselves for who they really are. When Ponyboy and Johnny are in the church, Johnny realizes that there is more to being a Greaser than hair grease and rumbles. He realizes that social classes do not define a person, but a person’s actions define a person. In the article, Inside Quad-City high school cliques, many researchers state the different reasons why kids need to express themselves. Mark Vincent, a social psychologist at Augustana College in Rock Island, affirms “Vincent explains humans do tend to believe that members of other groups are all the same. At the same time, they recognize the distinct differences among the people in their own group, physically, mentally and emotionally, he adds.” In short, Vincent is explaining that even though humans are in groups for the same reason, they have different personalities throughout.…
