What Is The Conch In Lord Of The Flies

The novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding was about an abundance of school boys that survived from a plane crash. Ralph and Piggy, the first characters introduced in/to the novel, used a conch that was found on the beach to find other boys that were lost throughout the island. When the surviving boys gathered around, they were quick to choose Ralph as their chief although Jack, who was portrayed as leader of the boys, desperately wanted to become chief as well. The first orders of business were building shelters but Jack believed that hunting was the number one priority; as a result, it caused many problems between Ralph and Jack that lead to the split of the tribe. In 1933, the beginning of Hitler’s takeover, hate towards Jews arouse throughout Germany. It was similar to when Jack wanted to jeopardize Ralph’s position as chief, “He’s like Piggy. He says things like Piggy. He isn't a proper chief.’ Jack clutched the conch to him. ‘He’s a coward himself.’...’He’s not a hunter. He’d never got us meat. He isn’t a prefect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing.” (Golding 112) When Jack was criticizing Ralph’s leadership at the meeting was similar to when Hitler villainized the Jews for not being the same as other typical Germans e.g. eye color, skin color, religion, traditions. It is able to interpret the connection of Hitler in WWII with Jack in Lord of the Flies. Another WWII allegorical example was the relationship between the Allies and Axis. During World War II, the Allies and Axis powers had many disputes similar to Jack and Ralph’s difficult relationship, “We need shelters.’ Suddenly Jack shouted in rage. ‘Are you accusing-’ ‘All I’m saying is we’ve worked dashed hard. That’s all.’ They were both red in the face and found looking at each other difficult.” (Golding 41) The back and forth arguments between Jack and Ralph interpreted the battles that occurred for 6 years between the Allies and Axis powers. In many republican campaigns, Donald Trump is famously known for denigrating other presidential candidates; similarly, Jack began to do that to get more boys on his tribe, “...And the next thing is that Ralph said my hunters are no good...Ralph thinks you’re cowards, running away from the boar and the best.” (Golding 112) The quote shows the similarity between two leaders and their strategy to get more people to vote or follow them. Ironically, both leaders were successful using that strategy, Jack gained the entire support from the boys except from Ralph, Piggy, Simon, and Samneric; Donald Trump is predicted to be the nominee of the republican party. Unlike the republican party, the democrats have a close race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. Bernie Sanders is known for helping the people and want equality and justice for everyone not just the rich. Ralph in Lord of the Flies had similar goals to him, he wanted to get all of the boys off the island instead of suffering, “There was a ship. Out there. We might have gone home-” (Golding 59) Ralph doesn’t want to just stay on the island and hope for the best, he wants to get the boys and himself off the island safe and sound.
