What Is Teen Suicide?
One of the most apparent issues regarding grief and loss when looking at teen suicide seems to be the perceived loss of innocence felt by the adolescent and their family. Baron (2000) talks in depth regarding communities who have experienced crisis and the difficulty for parents in dealing with their children having their innocence ripped from them because of preceding traumatic events (rethink). Families who endure one of their children losing their innocence seem to process the event in a similar way as actually losing a loved one.     Almost everyone has experienced bereavement of some form. Usually, this occurs after a person reaches adulthood and has emotionally matured and developed, but sometimes it unfortunately occurs to minors --those under 18 years of age.     On May 21, 2013 I experienced firsthand the shock, sadness and overwhelming grief of losing a friend to suicide. Bailey Leal, seventeen years of age, star soccer player for Stoneman Douglas High School was found dead by her sister. She had hung herself in her bedroom. Studies show that most teens use suffocation to end their life and Bailey was not an exception. Bailey and I attended Middle school together and played soccer for the city of Parkland for many years.
