What Is Sexual Orientation A Genetic Inheritance
My research project is on sexual orientation; is it a genetic inheritance? The reason why I chose this as my topic, is involved with my personal life. Most of my family is anything but heterosexual: My mom, my brothers, my sister and myself. In that case, I was genuinely interested in knowing whether sexual orientation has anything to do with genetics. Sexual orientation is an important thing to some peoples lives, so understanding it is very important. There is so much involved around ‘sexual orientation’ that it can be overwhelming sometimes. First, what does ‘sexual orientation’ or ‘sexuality’ mean? A sexual orientation is basically an continuing pattern of romantic or sexual attraction to a certain gender. A huge question relating to this topic is whether sexuality is passed through genetics or not. It has been a huge social debate for awhile. Some people think sexuality is, in fact, genetic and some think that someone’s sexual orientation is choice. Finally, that question has been answered. There was a study conducted on 818 gay men (409 pairs of openly homosexual brothers) by collected blood and saliva samples. All these men shared prominent patterns in two regions of the human genome- one on the X chromosome and one on chromosome 8. Researchers of that experiments had a theory that any single nucleotide polymorphisms steadily found among these men would have something to do with sexuality.     There are 2 types of sexual selection, of inter and intra. Intra-sexual selection is when there is competition within one sex (usually males) to compete with each other for access to the members of the opposite sex. Then whoever wins will be able to pass on their genes in reproduction and the traits of successful reproduction will be passed on. There is also intersexual selection which is the selection of particular traits in the mate of the opposite sex. This means that the preferred choice of one sex will determine the areas the other sex has to compete in. For example if all females prefer tall men then over time, there will be an increase in tall males since the tall characteristics will be passed onto offspring when tall males are chosen.
