What Is Phytoplankton Increase Carbon Emissions?
With oceans warming up, toxic algae blooms are popping up all around the globe. Toxic algae blooms are very harmful and happen when phytoplankton accumulate and create toxins like domoic acid, which is a neurotoxin that can be deadly (Geiling). What give the phytoplankton the conditions to grow are the increasing temperatures of the oceans. Emissions are coming from places like cement production (which is a leading cause) deforestation, and fossil fuels like coal, natural gas and oil, which increase carbon emissions, which in turn, increase ocean temperatures. Without a human element on earth, the normal rate of carbon emissions would be drastically lower than what is it today and ocean temperatures wouldn’t be increasing at its current rate.

    No doubt about it, pollution has been an environmental threat for a long time to our magnificent ocean and everyone knows that. In the text, “In addition to debris, the oceans are polluted by oil, sewage, and toxic chemicals,”(Dignan 14). This really proves that pollution is a part of environmental threats because oil, sewage, and toxic chemicals keep on either being purposely or accidentally dumped into the ocean which kills fish and habitats they live in. Vengeance did not come with this, but in other hands, overfishing has also been a problem in the environmental threat category. As the author stated, “...have shrunken-some drastically-as a result of overfishing or catching fish faster than they can reproduce,”(Dignan 14). This shows that overfishing is a problem because each time people overfish, down in the ocean fish can’t reproduce fast enough so less fish than before are left and other fish don’t have food then. Of course, global warming or climate change has been a huge environmental threat for a long time. Beyond that, as mentioned by NationalGeographic.com, “Global warming may lead to devastating droughts.” This illustrates that global warming also is a problem to the ocean because like National Geographic said, droughts cause less fish to appear and the ocean gets overflowed with air from humidity so it can’t get air…

    Since the inception of planet earth, the sun has heated the planet. As earth cooled and an atmosphere developed, it provided a protective shell that allowed microscopic creatures and plant life to grow. As the species on earth diversified, plants began to absorb carbon dioxide and provided oxygen that was needed for animal life. In turn animals exhaled carbon dioxide for plant life. Over time, a complex symbiotic relationship developed between the earth’s weather, chemical elements, and living organisms. This balance has, for the most part, helped keep the global temperatures relatively constant. However, there are at least five times that global temperatures drastically changed resulting in the mass extinction of a good portion of the species living at that time. These were caused by natural occurring events such as extreme volcanic activity or an impact of a large asteroid on the earth. Now however, some scientist are questioning where or not human activities that produce large amounts of carbon dioxide will lead to extreme changes in climate and another mass extinction event. While the debate rages on, the earth continues to warm. Furthermore, very little has been done to address the issue as inaction continues to be the norm. And even though global warming is a natural phenomenon, there is evidence that human actions are exacerbating the problem to a point that it could ultimately lead to a collapse of the environment and the biodiversity of the planet, to include the possible elimination of the human race.
