What Is Penelope's Relationship In The Odyssey
Marriage and Courtship

Marriage is when a man and a woman are religiously committed to each other. In ancient Greek culture, this reflected on the relationship of the King and Queen, and Odysseus and Penelope, but they weren’t quite similar. The King and Queen had a closer relationship, while Odysseus and Penelope were always separated. Odysseus and Penelope’s marriage was nothing like the King and Queens. Odysseus wasn’t really faithful while trying to get back to his wife. For example, the first time Odysseus wasn’t faithful was when he was captured by Calypso. In The Odyssey, it said “Even as he spoke, the sun set and the darkness swept the earth. And now, withdrawing into the cavern’s deep recesses, long in each other’s arms they lost

think Odysseus and his wife Penelope are perfect for each other and were meant to be together. I also believe Odysseus and Penelope's story is a very good example of how most military families function. I can relate to their story just a little bit because my husband was in the Air Force for six years. My husband served in the Air Froce from 2001 until 2007. He left for basic training just a couple months after the attack on September 11. The six years that he was in the military we got to experience one deployment.…

At last, Odysseus broke down and wept into Penelope, his faithful and loyal wife, who he had yearned for twenty years. Few men can return after twenty years to find their wives still faithful and loving the way Odysseus had. The two hugged for what seemed like forever, and rejoiced, for the battle and difficulties were now behind them. For the first time in twenty years, Odysseus and Penelope enjoyed a blissful night and exchanged an endless number of stories. Odysseus shows infidelity multiple times throughout the whole epic. First, he cheats on Penelope with the goddess/nymph Calypso. Hermes finds Odysseus “tormenting himself with tears and sighs and heartache” (Homer. 65) on Ogygia’s beach, so clearly Odysseus is miserable and misses Penelope. This still doesn't take away from the fact that Odysseus cheated on Penelope. Just because his heart truly belongs to Penelope doesn't make being unfaithful acceptable. A murder can’t say they cared about the person they killed and not be punished. Similarly, he cheats with Circe too. He stays on her island for a year before his crew members have to drag…

Love is a powerful word. It has been told that through love, you can conquer all things. Like Odysseus, who traveled for years, for miles, and would endure any pain for the love of his family. Odysseus and Penelope had a very strong connection and marriage compared to others whom lived in this era. An era in which the definition of marriage was not one that we are quite used to. People of this age did not marry someone because they necessarily “loved” their spouse- but for the other things that the man or woman would bring to the table. Women looked for a suitor who would bring in the best gifts along with someone that would take care of the household. Men sought out for a certain reputation. They compete for the one they had laid eyes on by…

Another quality treasured by the Greeks was loyalty and fidelity. Despite enriching experiences and countless temptations along his travels, Oedipus never strays from his path and ultimate dream to return to his home and family. However, because he genuinely loves his wife and maintains fidelity towards her, he refuses Calypso’s offer. The love between a husband and wife is a sacred bond and loyalty keeps that bond together. According to the definition of loyalty at that point in time Odysseus and Penelopeia were loyal to each other while Odysseus was gone on his odyssey. Odysseus was with both Circe and Calypso while gone but ultimately returned to Penelopeia. Today in age this would not be considered loyal, however, in ancient Greece it was considered typical. Penelopeia was completely faithful to Odysseus the entire time while he was away. She had many suitors but believed in being loyal to her husband until she was absolutely sure that he was dead. Love empowered her to have this kind of loyalty to him. The following quote shows Penelopeia’s love for Odysseus, "So dear is he that I long for and never forget – my husband." (p.19, Homer, The Odyssey)…
