In my high school years as of not long ago, my most loved artists are for the most part Korean boy bands such as BTS and Day6. I love how they convey their feelings through music and dance. I would not say that this music holds much value to me, however I do value the meaning of the song lyrics. More specifically, I like the phrase “let the good times roll”. There are two things that defines value for me in music. The first thing that I value in music is how it can make you feel since music can make you feel a wide array of emotions. For example, whenever you are feeling upset and you listen to one of your favorite songs it can lift your mood and make you feel a lot better. The second thing that defines value for me in music is when you can relate to it. Typically, song lyrics stem from the personal thoughts or feelings by the person who wrote the lyrics. Song lyrics can always be interpreted in more ways than one by many different…

Music has always been a part of us ever since the begging of time. It’s been with us threw the happy, great times and also for the not so happy bad times. We can express ourselves with music by telling a story with in the lyrics and even with the beat showing, telling how we are feeling. It can be a cheerful, carefree, joyful beat, to gloomy, mournful, blue beat, but not everyone has the same taste in music. Music it’s self is unbelievably stunning and so breathtaking.…

Throughout the course of my junior year, I have been challenged to be the best artist of my ability. As a graphic designer, I have learned to view things in a different light and learned to express my creativity. Although I am still learning new things everyday about how to become a better artist, I have improved tremendously in every way ranging from the thought process all the way to finalizing each project, and I think that as the days go by I will continue to do well in my high school graphic design career, but in continuing my education in this major and working in a field closely related to it. I have produced at least 5 projects that reflect my passion for graphic design including the New York World’s Fair, currency recreation, and the handmade film poster from the first semester of my junior year and from the second half up until my most recent project, a book jacket, and an organic drink package design.…

My name is Guy Johanson, and I am a sophomore Music Education major at the Setnor School of Music. I am originally from Liverpool, NY, just outside of Syracuse. I have been involved with Syracuse University since the time I was in middle school participating in youth ensembles playing the French Horn and the Oboe. Currently I am a member of the Syracuse University Marching Band, Tau Beta Sigma (the national band sorority), and am usually playing with many ensembles around campus. I work at Old Navy in Destiny USA during school breaks, while during the school year I work at the Cathedral Academy at Pompey as an after school music program teacher. My strongest skill that I possess, I believe, is my ability to time manage. Throughout the past year and a half, I have learned to balance 19+ credits, sorority involvement, and working two jobs during the year.…

While I may enjoy certain areas of academic study at this point in time, I have not reached the level of passion that I have reached for my musical endeavors. I believe that this is because I have attached my academic interests exclusively to my time in school classrooms, while music has brought me to many different lively events and performances. When I heard about the numerous facilities and museums available at LSA, I recognized them as a way to physically and emotionally connect to material that was previously only…

My love for music began in middle school. At that time, I was socially awkward with very few friends. To compensate, I buried myself in music. My dedication led to many honors and admiration from my peers. However, when I got to high school, my relationship with music fundamentally changed. The arrival of an overly demanding teacher coupled with a long episode of depression robbed me of my passion to play. As time progressed, the pain I felt became too much to bear, and I became desperate for an outlet in which I could express myself positively. My quest led me to music once more, but classical was no longer the genre of choice. It was in hip hop and rap music that I found the will to overcome mental illness.…

The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…

It sometimes feels like I’m in a movie and about to discover something important to the storyline, and it really helps me work faster and more efficiently. It motivates me to keep working when I want to take a break or take a nap. Most of the time, I am not very motivated to work or study, so when I listen to music, I feel more motivated than when I listen to more classical music. With a more upbeat tempo, I tend to work faster, and concentrate more so I can be as efficient as possible. Music with lyrics is distracting when you are trying to study. It takes attention away from the work you are supposed to be doing. Whenever I am listening to music with lyrics, I get confused about the words and letters fumbling around in my head. I get my ideas and the lyrics all mixed up, and I sometimes end up writing down the lyrics instead of doing work. This makes everything confusing, because then I forget the ideas I was thinking at the time. I also make a lot more grammatical and spelling mistakes. Then it takes longer to complete the work, because I have to go back and fix them. Music with lyrics also distract from studying. Lyrics also work against you when you are trying to learn things or remember…

Growing up, I was always an outgoing child, but I never liked being the center of attention. I’ve always had a passion for music, and in the sixth grade, I started taking voice and piano lessons. Once I made it to high school, I was certain that I wanted a career in music. I convinced myself that music is what I was destined to do. During my junior year, I stumbled upon music therapy, which was a great combination of my two favorite things—music and helping others— and ultimately decided to apply for Belmont. The first few months of classes were great; I was even more in love with music therapy and how it can change peoples’ lives. However, at the end of second semester, I had a change of heart and mind. I realized that even though I have always loved music, maybe I could make a difference in people’s lives without using music.…
