According to US legal (2016), “child neglect or abuse occurs when a caregiver fails to care for the youths physical or emotional needs.” In my opinion, I think that the parents should be charge with neglect. The reason I think that the parents should be charged with neglect is because they dropped their kids off with a complete stranger. Lester and Betty Likens only sent money to Gertrude for the girls but never came to visit to see if they were being treated properly. Even after the Likens received a call from the girls with concerns about the checks being late they still never came to see what was going on with the girls. I think that the actions of Lester and Betty Likens were neglect because they didn’t care about their daughters needs but their own. As a result, of Lester and Betty leaving the girls with a stranger resulted in the death of Sylvia. The Likens had no idea how Gertrude was treating the girls because they never called her to see. They only sent letters in which the girls never wrote back and should have been a red flag to them that something wasn’t right with their daughters and that they needed to come visit…
