What is Management
WHAT IS MANAGEMENT
Management has been alive since older times because the need to develop it aroused. The subject of management is a science in its own ambit, it is such a thorough and detailed subject that its effects in any other subject and disciplines cannot be negated and ignored.
Harold Koontz,Dec 1961.the Management Theory Jungle, University of California, explains in his book that the art of management is reflected by perspective writers who have illuminated many years of their experience to reflect upon what management actually means in its literal terms and the few of them are Fayol,Mooney,Alvin,Brown,Sheldon,Bernard and Urwick. From their point of view a jungle of approaches have taken over the theory of management and all of them collectively think that management is actually how things are done and why they are done that way. The story of Hawthorne experiment and other behavioral studies believe that management is a science of psychology comprised of interrelated and complex relationships. Thus management is a practice whereby decisions are taken to deal with the issues of an organization.
Dr Yasin Olum , presented a paper at 15th East African conference at Kenya School of Monetary Studies defined management saying that management is the achievement of goals through people. Managers are ensured that they keep on implementing new methods in order to bring continuous improvements. Similarly Koontz and Weihrich 1990 page 4 says that management is basically designing a model and environment where individuals pool in their efforts in a group and head together towards the selected aims. It can be said that management basically means organizing, controlling, staffing, leading and managing. Management is thus about solving problems that keep on rooting up as organizations keep on expanding to reach its ultimate goals. Management identifies those obstacles and implements a solution like crisis

Brockman Guitar Company is in the business of manufacturing top-quality, steel-string folk guitars. In recent years the company has experienced working capital problems resulting from the procurement of factory equipment, the unanticipated buildup of receivables and inventories, and the payoff of a balloon mortgage on a new manufacturing facility. The founder and president of the company, Barbara Brockman, has attempted to raise cash from various financial institutions, but to no avail because of the company’s poor performance in recent years. In particular, the company’s lead bank, First Financial, is especially concerned about Brockman’s inability to maintain a positive cash position. The commercial loan officer from First Financial told Barbara, “I can’t even consider your request for capital financing unless I see that your company is able to generate positive cash flows from operations.” Thinking about the banker’s comment, Barbara came up with what she believes is a good plan: With a more attractive statement of cash flows, the bank might be willing to provide long-term financing. To “window dress” cash flows, the company can sell its accounts receivables to factors and liquidate its raw materials inventories. These rather costly transactions would generate lots of cash. As the chief accountant for Brockman Guitar, it is your job to tell Barbara what you think of her plan. Answer the following questions.…

It has been generally approved that management theory is a multidisciplinary area of study that expansively draws from other foundational disciplines such as Engineering, Sociology, Mathematics, Economics etc. (Oswick, Fleming & Hanlon 2011). It also borrows ideas and concepts from these other fields of study.…

Management is a universal concept because its principles and techniques are used all over the world, irrespective of their level of development. The basic objective of the management is the progress of people and not the direction of things. The conservative explanation of management is obtaining work done through its people, but the factual management refers to the development of people through work. The management should make the difficulties interesting and their solutions productive for the team members so that everyone can deal with these situations. Management has to provide effective leadership, promote team spirit, set in motion bilateral and multi-lateral channels of communication and enroll the participation of its people, commitment and contribution through an appropriate system of financial and non-financial incentives.…
