The Responsibility Project: Ethics Game Dilemmas

Ethics are principles, which outline moral values and rules regardless if it is in a working environment or not. Each employee has a personal responsibility to uphold the rules and regulations set forth by the company. Within this essay will be discussed the Mysterious blogger and the Veiled ID and the ethical situation surrounding this scenario. Furthermore my personal response to the story, the ethical issues, decision making steps, ethical perspectives.

As a manager of a company, it is the responsibility to hold everyone accountable for their actions. According to Gaikwad (2011) “Loyalty or faithfulness towards work builds a sense of trust amongst employees and the employer. The role of loyalty is an important one while nurturing an ethical workplace.” While in the particular scenario, Jamal Moore acted on his own to show Aaron Webb had violated the NDA. The problem is that both parties were wrong in a sense and should have been punished accordingly. Originally, the decision was to use the information provided to fire Aaron Webb for violating the NDA and simply discipline Jamal Moore for illegally obtaining the information; however in the end, the decision was changed to discipline both individuals for their actions. The simulation stated that the responses show a tendency to be a realist and acknowledge the very human frailties that everyone

    Ethical behavior within a company is very important to its future and success. This type of behavior is not just important for the employees to follow, but for the entire company. In 2001, a failing company called Enron was involved in numerous unethical behaviors. For example, Enron’s Chief Financial Officer temporarily suspended their “code of ethics” not once, but twice in order to partake in personal financial gain. Enron’s actions eventually resulted in bankruptcy and assisted with the creation of a new set of guidelines for companies to follow. The so-called guidelines were called the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (Titman, S., Keown, A.J., & Martin, J.D. 2011). The SOX helped institute a set of rules for companies to follow, one being the creation and compliance of a code of ethics within every company.     In the case of mysterious roses am depicted as director of sales. Who is possibly handling a situation revolving around possible harassment. Gayle Dornier had been receiving anonymous flowers and another employee (Bill Witherspoon) is suspected of being responsible. Gayle has requested me for a personal meeting regarding a confidential matter. The ethical issue presented here is how to ensure that Gayle can talk about what happened while meeting your responsibility as a manager to treat all employees fairly in an investigation. To arrive to my decision I followed different steps in the Baird model. By being attentive to what was happening in regards to the situation. After I used being intelligent to determine my stakeholders while looking at the big picture of what was the exact problem. In the next step, be reasonable I examined the situation using different lenses. Where I determined what would make each stakeholder happy while keeping my responsibilities in mind.     The ethical issues that were presented in the Week Three Ethics Game Simulations were from The Mysterious Blogger and The Veiled ID. The ethical issues on “The Mysterious Blogger” were whether the information obtained by Jamal Moore, the IT Tech was enough to discipline Aaron Webb, the blogging employee for violating the NDA policy. As for “The Veiled ID”, the ethical issue had to do with how to develop a security policy that provides for employees’ physical safety and accommodating special needs. The decision making steps taken to work on these ethical issues were based on the job position giving by the simulation. These decisions making were to protect the interest of shareholders and the effects on a long and short terms. Everyone who made a contribution or an investment to the company will be affected by any ethical issues that arise or are brought up by the organization or an employee. It will also affect the individual and the company. Apart from always doing the right things and following company’s rules, it is also about protecting the shareholders and the interest of the company. If the companies policies are broken in any way, a good decision has to be taken that will produce the best outcome in the situation, that way order and discipline will be maintain within the company. The ethical perspectives that were used to make the decisions taken during the simulation were based only on some options that were giving in each scenario. In the simulation there was no right or wrong answers, it was based on the time taken to use critical thinking in order to reach a decision that best fitted the situation.
