Collective bargaining is the process involving an organization's management (employer) and trade union members (employees) to negotiate wages, working conditions, working hours, and any other matters relating to the terms and conditions of the employment. Trade unions are required to register themselves with the government as stated in Trade Union Act. Traditionally, collective bargaining was widely used by union members who are factory (blue-collar) workers to fight for better wages, compensation and working hours especially during Industrial Revolution. However, with the rising number of working professionals such as doctors and engineers, collective bargaining has been increasingly adapted by these white-collar employees. Firstly, in order to negotiate with the employer, trade union members should understand the employment law of their country. Compared to blue-collar workers who received limited level of education, white-collar employees have stronger negotiation power when bargaining with the employer. In addition, as far as the blue-collar workers concern, they negotiate with employer for better wages, working hours and perhaps working conditions only. In contrast, white-collar employees use collective bargaining as the tool to fight for non-wage issue such as request of setting up a child care center in the company premise for single-parent employee who is unable to afford hiring a nanny to take care of their children. With the help of information technology today, white-collar employees tend to have more exposure on the information relating to other employer's terms and benefits given to their employees. This could be helpful in comparing with their current working terms. Hence, white-collar employees' knowledge and social awareness on this will have greater impact on the increase of collective bargaining.
