1. 0-5 Years Old:
As Erikson’s theory suggests, this time period is primarily focused on the virtues of hope, will, and purpose. Since all young children are extremely dependent on their parents or guardians, it’s no surprise that I relied heavily on my parents for support during this time period. In terms of school experiences, I attended preschool and kindergarten. On my first day of preschool, my mom told me that I was very anxious to leave her. However, I ended up acclimating well to preschool, and I enjoyed playing with the other children. As a result, I was still seeking approval from my parents and other family members. When I was in the third grade, I was failing math class. Since I was putting a lot of effort into the subject, my teacher didn’t think that my difficulty was due to apathy, rather due to some sort of cognitive disorder. As a result, the school psychologist tested my mental abilities, and she determined that I had a learning disability. Being labeled as a special needs student, I felt ostracized from the “normal kids”. While there were other students in the special needs classroom, most of them lacked the social skills to form friendships. Consequently, I didn’t feel like I “belonged” at my elementary school. However, I turned to my hobbies, singing and swimming, to cultivate meaningful …show more content…
As a result, I ignored the opinions of negative peers, and I focused on being a good friend to those who enjoyed my company. While I was by no means “popular”, I built a solid support system. Academic achievement became a norm for me, and I was very satisfied with my friendships in high school. Once again, my passion for singing allowed me to join the choir in high school. To this day, I am still extremely good friends with my friends from high school choir. Also, taking trips with the choir allowed me to experience independence from my
