What Is A Hero?
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life for something bigger than oneself” (Campbell). A hero should be someone that has given all they got for someone else, but not every time do they have to have given their life. Today the term hero is used very often, but not always accurate to the true definition of a hero, for if you're talking about someone that’s your personal hero that’s more of a role model and it’s a completely different thing. However, for example, if you’re calling a 9/11 firefighter who put their life on the line for others, that would be using the word to its full potential. The actual definition of a hero is “a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of a character” (“Hero”). Normal people can still be heroes, …show more content…
For nowhere in the definition did it say personal hero, for that would be a role model. Today hero is used too often for someone who is a role model, while the person can be both they’re two completely different things. A role model would be someone you look up to or someone who has influenced you while a hero is someone that gives everything to help someone else. While the two are closely related calling someone your hero is actually just a role model unless that person had actually saved your life, or had done something significant for …show more content…
Many wouldn’t know the story of Saint Maximilian even though he is a true hero. Kolbe was a “superior of the City of Mary Immaculate and director of Poland’s chief Catholic publishing complex” (“Saint Maksymilian Maria Kolbe”). Which is basically just saying that he was a writer for for the church. Kolbe was living in Poland during WWII where he was eventually captured by the Gestapo for hiding Jews and other victims and was sent to Auschwitz (“St. Maximilian Kolbe”). While in Auschwitz, he was especially picked on by a work party overseer. Once he was nearly beaten to death, but never held a grudge and remained selfless for others. While some would argue that itself is a heroic act, but with the events later on that wouldn’t be necessary. One day three prisoners had escaped and to set an example the Deputy Commander ordered ten men to be starved to death, and when someone picked by the name of Franciszek Gajowniczek cried out “My wife! My children!” Saint Maximilian Kolbe volunteered to take his place. After two weeks of starvation and praying everyone had died except Kolbe; even one of the SS guards said “this priest is really a great man. We have never seen anyone like him”. While failing to starve him to death, they eventually had to kill him using lethal injection (Pettinger). What Saint Maximilian Kolbe did matches the exact definition of a hero. Not only did his heroic

They go out into dangerous fires to save the lives of thousands of people and animals. The definition of hero varies among people but, in my definition of a Hero is a person who is able to achieve the difficult task regardless of the resistance of society or sacrificing themselves in risky situations. A hero is not a person who is easily scared, gives up easily and selfish. In my opinion, when people are described as “hero” we neglect their bad behaviors, but this doesn’t imply to every hero we should be aware of such things because we all have our own flaws.…

To most people, a hero is a strong, brave person with an amazing costume. Heroes usually have super powers and are constantly saving people. But it takes many more traits than this to be classified as a hero. Some characteristics of a hero are super natural help, leaving on a journey in which the hero proves himself, a fatal flaw, and they are sometimes honored after death. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus shows many traits of a hero. Odysseus faces many obstacles and life threatening situations but he overcomes them all. What does it mean to be a hero? Well when I was little , about four to five years old I thought a hero was a person that had a lot of super powers . A superhero like the ones in cartoons like Batman , Power Rangers , Superman, Spider-man, and 0thers. But as I kept growing I said I always asked myself what is a hero? Is it some famous person, super hero or what? I never did quite understand the meaning till about now. Now I completely understand, a hero to me is someone who would always be there for anyone, someone who would put others first before themselves. Someone who you can trust with just about everything. Someone who is terrified to do something but does it anyway. But the biggest thing of all is that they have self-trust. I think to be a hero you must be positive, out looking, mentally strong and have compassion. Not many people have these qualities because in the world today people have lost their compassion because they have their own problems. But still people help each other. Very few and I mean very few acutely stop to realize that you need help. Then even fewer do something about it. I cant call my self to be a hero a hero must be have the qualification of helping other people It is important to try to better yourself, to strive to make yourself a better person, to become a hero to yourself or perhaps a mentor for others. This does involve some sacrifices and self discipline. You must push yourself and not give up. I think I am capable of this if I put my mind to it, and stick to my commitments. I would like to be stronger, healthier, wealthier and control my mental abilities I am going to work on controlling my anger. By controlling my emotions, it could help me keep a job and make my parents proud of me. If I can become stronger, healthier, wealthier and have more control of my feelings and emotions, I will become a better person for my…

To me, a hero is a person that is a role model to others, is true to themselves, and is worthy of imitation. A hero is somebody who inspires others to be like them. It is not necessary for them to be perfect, because every human is flawed, but a great hero should take responsibility, learn from the experience, and move on. In fact, one of the qualities that makes a hero truly worth of admiration, is the ability to rise above and exhibit perseverance and strength.…
