What&How I Learnt from the Course?
What&How I Learnt from the Course? There is a strange fact that excellent English learners, you can find, are very familiar with western culture and also can talk it with foreigners freely. But when they talked about our own culture,it became not so easy to explain chinese culture accurately in English. So what role Chinese culture plays in the process of learning English-speaking countries’s culture ? On one hand,it may be obstruct our study.Because it is vastly different from others in some aspect. On the other hand, compared with others, while we learnt other culture,we can known our own culture in a new way and unterstood it deeper at the same time. As I told before,I will discuss mainly the difference between Chinese culture and British (American) culture .Since my limited knowledge,I can only write some simple opinions, meanwhile,it is not across-the-board. • Value Individualism VS Collectivism These two kind of values are based on two kind of politics, that is capitalism and communism.Apparently, between capitalism and communism, there were a lot of conflict. But the past and the present have proved that they could exist at the same time.So I can believe that it is also possible to individualism and collectivism. There is no doubt that the indiviualism is the value that most Briton and American appreciated and accepted. In China, several decades ago,the coolectivism was the main value .But,now,is has changed, especially after the Open-up policy put into practise, various values that came from different parts of the world were drawn into and have influenced more and more Chinese. The younger generation is more likely to adopt the individualism and other new values, while the elder generation is still persist in the former value.Because in the time that they had lived, the individualism is equal to egoism.Although the values in China is ont simply but diverse, the collectivism is the mainstream at present and in future. • Religion In Britian, most people are christians.Compared with US,since the Gueen is legally the “supreme governor” of the church of England, the religious problem is linked with the politics. According to the US Consititution,American government would not meddle in religious affairs or require any religious beliefs of its citizens. And it is because of this reason that Europe people were willing to settle down the new land.A kind of “three faiths” model of the united states had developed by the 1950s.Americans are considered to come in three basic varieties:Protestant,Catholic, jewish. The same to the US,everyone have the freedom of believing it or not and choosing which religious sect in China.Buddhism,Taoism and Confucianism were the main three religious group for a long time.Christianity had been introduced at yuan Dynasty. But until the middle of 1800s,some churches were allowed to build at some cities. After one ceuntry and more,Christianity and Iislam,as well as that three religion, are the five important religious group. The fact is that more and more people trend to be atheism. • Society As the great power in history and now,Bitian and the united stated are all a highly urbanised country. And the level of urbanization is absolutely higher than China.Due to the speed and standard of industrialization,China is still in the process of urbanization.Meanwhile, the process will continue for a period. In some cities of the US,some people prefered to live at town or cunntyrside. There are several explaination. No matter in city or at town, the basic facilities are alike. And all kinds of transportation insured that the convenient from one place to another.Besides, the air at countryside is more fresh. The most important thing is that it is easier and possible to be closed to the nature. • Manners Feminism VS Macho The different between the western and the eastern on manners is wheather the female or the male, who is the centre. Thanks to the women’s movement, women can gain the same right as men .But some unequal things still happened. In Britian, the female is the centre on most occasion.Lady frist is a basic law of manners that were recognized by everyone. As a gentry, you should help the lady open the car door, sit down after the lady have sitted down,or try your best to help her.And it is your honour to do that. In China, the female is less important than the male in traditional. So in some occasion, men are the centre. An usual case can prove this point.A Chinese couple invited some friends or relatives to have a dinner at home. You will found that the hostess is always busy with cooking, while the host and the guest are enjoy the meal.It is very common to Chinese. If there are some foreigner in guests,it may be difficulty for them to understand. • Character Briton is conservative, and American is casual.Because of less communication with the foreigner.characteristics of Chinese were the topic in this part. The Moderatin is the core principle ,which implied the moderate nature of Chinese in dealing with world matters.Ostentation and Competitiveness Principle is deeo-rootd in Chinese culture and a prevailing practice in modern Chinese life. The Unification Principle is one of the nation’s important characteristics. The “Unification” means the centralization or “reunion” of the world matters. The closed Nature is another important characteristics.Because of its tyoical social structure and the geographical conditions,China tends to be self-centered and its people are more likely to have an egoistic world outlook. The last one is The Reaongnition Principle. It means Chinese culture develops as it gets impacted and is thinking over cultures of oyher nations in the world. • Privacy Privacy is not equal to secret. The privacy is one sapect of individualism.Everyone should be independent and have their own time &space to be alone at sometimes.Something like income, age that be related to their personal information. If someone was ill and stayed at hospital,in US,the ill did ont want to be botherde by others, which including his relatives and friends. His relatives and friends also did not want to bother the ill.But in China, the situation is different. It seemed that you should share with your friends and keep secrets from them in China. And keeping secrets means you do not believe in your friends. But it is necessary and possible for best friends. If they known a lot about him,he may think he lose his personality.A case can explain it more clearly. You should not read his notebook and the book on his bookdesk if he did not allow you to do that. But it is unbelievable to Chinese. • Education British and American education system is highly developed and independent.parents and students can have more shools to choose. The state shools provided compulsory primary and secondary educationto all children.Meanwhile, there are some private shools.but you needed pay a high tuition rates for studying at there. And churches played an important role in education. Even though Chinese introducedthe western education system into China, chinese education has some peculiar.Exams replaceed the other things and became the first important things. In order to enter into a better shools and university, you must get high scores at exams. The teachers and facilities on education are less,so one class must contain more students and the quality of education is lower. The politics has strong effect on education. The new science and technology university of the south is a example. • American Dream VS Chinese Dream American Dream is still hot now. That is ,in US ,you can gain something that you dreamed through your hard working,no matter you came from which class or what skin colour you are.So for a long time ,united states has attracted amount of immigrants. While China may have once been a favored destination for expats seeking exotic experiences such as teaching English or learning Chinese, an increasing number of people are flocking eastward to realize their dreams. As the Chinese economy continues to grow, success is flourishing not only for entrepreneurial Chinese, but also for foreign residents with an eye for opportunity. • Conclusion The aim of this paper is not to totally find the difference, but to say the some.It is obivous that chinese part is more than Btitish and American part.It means that I hope the reader could think our own culture when we are studying the western culture. One pride that American culture values most is individualism; where one is self-reliant. However, individualism has taken its own course and developed over time. Previously, individualism was based on one’s own values and morals where they based their lives on their own ideals. The ideal of individualism developed into a set of morals and ideals of one individual in which their values and morals spreads to society.…

Individualism is a habit of being self- reliant. A cultural value is a persons desired and preferred way of acting. Every culture has their own cultural values and individualism but whether individualism is their cultural value is up to the person entirely. This could pose a conflict when persuading the wrong culture especially a culture as diverse as the American culture. Poranee Sponsel is a born and raised Thai who is now a professor at a university in Hawaii and gives us the outsider’s perspective of the American culture. In Sponsel’s article “The Young, the Rich, and the Famous: Individualism as an American Cultural value” Sponsel unsuccessfully persuades Americans that individualism is an American cultural value by contrasts, stereotyping, and bias remarks.…

In America their cultural talks about individualism are taught to think about themselves. They are encouraged to pursue individualism or pursue their own goals as far as what they want to do. Because they are encouraged to be individualized they are challenged with understanding other people’s point of view. The Chinese are taught to think in connection to a group, rather than being independent they are inter-dependent. They are more connectional as a group, their whole relationship or concept of self is based on relationships and their social obligation.…

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, the definition of culture is “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group”. Every country has its specific culture and there are some obvious cultural universals between China and America. One example of such cultural universal is the directness of American versus the humbleness of the Chinese people. Another example would be the self independence of the young Americans versus the young Chinese who tend to depend on their parents. What I would like to cover are the holidays observed by United States and China, roles played in the family by husband and wife, parenting styles and conflict management.…

What is culture? The word culture has many different meanings. For some it refers to an appreciation of good literature, music, art, and food. If one is looking this word up in a dictionary, he will find out that culture is ¡§the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought. These patterns, traits, and products considered as the expression of a particular period, class, community, or population.¡¨ This definition is very true. Indeed, it probably contains most of the concepts of what I think culture is. However, as a foreign born Chinese-American, I would add a few concepts that inherited from my parents as follow; the proper way to eat, such as using the right hand only, the proper way to use a knife and fork, chopsticks, and the comfortable physical distance between people talking.…

Collectivism, in its broadest sense, focuses on two key elements: priority of group goals over individual goals and cohesion within social groups. In the case of China, under influences from Confucius teachings, collectivism is regarded as a national virtue. China’s type of collectivism is specifically vertical collectivism, which is based on hierarchical structures of power and on moral and cultural conformity. As such, citizens are expected to conform to a certain standard of moral obligation; anyone who goes against it is shameful for doing so. Furthermore, the hierarchical structures of power gives an individual supreme power over those deemed as having lower ranks under the social hierarchy while requires absolute obidience to those with higher…

Our society, in the United States, is made up of people from many different culturally diverse backgrounds. Culture includes both dominant and minority groups. A dominant group is the group within a country or society that has the most authority to control values and sanctions of the society, and in the United States it is composed of white middle-class people. According with Taylor, Lillis, LeMone and Lynn (2008), some of the values of our society include the following: “youth and beauty, success and achievement, independence and self-reliance, technology, duty and conscience”(p. 56). In contrast, one of the oldest cultures in the world, China has different values: high respect for age, strong sense of self-respect and self-control, strong emphasis on…
