Chapter 20: What Happened to Candide When He Visited the Acclaimed High School of Diamond Bar. While walking on the finest cleanest pavement, Candide knew he had arrived at the one place every human being wants to be every day. "Diamond Bar High School", they called it. Never has he seen such a beautiful sight! The buildings were so beautifully built, and a multitude of smiling and laughing children littered the campus ground.
It was at the crack of dawn when Candide followed some students into what he later found was an “AP Biology” class. As he looked around, there were many nodding heads. It was so refreshing to see the students agreeing so enthusiastically. This certainly proves that

“It’s time for lunch!” the teacher announced. Candide was quite confused, as the clocked seemed to read 11:00 PM. He was very impressed with the teacher’s tremendous analytical proficiency, for she could figure out what time it was, even though the clock was clearly not accurate. As the loud and droning sound of the bell rang, all the children ran out of the classroom as soon as they could. “How fantastic! I can’t wait to taste the mystical delicacies of Diamond Bar High School!” Candide fought his way through the crowd, but eventually reached the lunch line. Standing in the hot sun, Candide squinted as he struggled to read the lunch menu. “Special: week-old rice with a side of mystery meat emulsion” caught Candide’s eye. Candide’s mouth watered with delight as his eyes feasted upon those words. He couldn’t wait through the long line, so he walked past ten people in front of him, stood next to an unsuspecting individual, and made a new friend. As soon as he received his food, he exclaimed, “This is fantastic, this is what I have been waiting all that time for! It looks too good to eat.” Candide stared down at his tantalizing and healthful meal as he picked it up and took a bite. “Amazing! This is the most enjoyable flavor I have ever had the pleasure of tasting! There is nothing I admire more than a pungent and flavorful mix of rubber and …show more content…
It was lunch time, so he was quite perplexed that they were not enjoying the scrumptious delights Diamond Bar High School has to offer. “Hello, is the Diamond Bar High School food so delicious, you have gobbled it down already?” The children simply stare at Candide, then continue to talk about their SAT and how their self-worth is measured by their scores. Candide thought what they talked about was strange, but he admired how affable they were toward each other. These intelligent beings abbreviate their complex language, such as complicated vocabulary from “TTYL” to “LOL”. This enforces exceptional literary strength and further improves communication skills. Unfortunately, writers of the past were never as brilliant as the Diamond Bar High School children to think of

As Telly walked to the Cafeteria from his English class, he wondered what he had for lunch today; he opened his backpack and realized that he had left his lunch at home! He didn’t have any money for the school lunch and wouldn’t dare to try and ask the kids on the dark, far-end of the cafeteria for anything. As Telly looked over at the creatures, they instantly reminded him of the story-book characters from “Creatures from the black lagoon!” but without them turning out to be nice in the end. Avery, one of his best friend, offered to share his lunch with him though. Telly was really hungry and immediately went to wolfing down his half of the sandwich. Once he finished, he felt…weird.…

You really don’t know who we are?” Jason shrugged helplessly. “It’s worse than that. I don’t know who I am.” The bus dropped them in front of a big red stucco complex like a museum, just sitting in the middle of nowhere. Maybe that’s what it was: the National Museum of Nowhere, Jason thought. A cold wind blew across the desert. Jason hadn’t paid much attention to what he was wearing, but it wasn’t nearly warm enough: jeans and sneakers, a purple T-shirt, and a thin black windbreaker. “So, a crash course for the amnesiac,” Leo said, in a helpful tone that made Jason think this was not going to be helpful. “We go to the ‘Wilderness School’”—Leo made air quotes with his fingers. “Which means we’re ‘bad kids.’ Your family, or the court, or whoever, decided you were too much trouble, so they shipped you off to this lovely prison—sorry, ‘boarding school’—in Armpit, Nevada, where you learn valuable nature skills like running ten miles a day through the cacti and weaving daisies into hats! And for a special treat we go on ‘educational’ field trips with Coach Hedge, who keeps order with a baseball bat. Is it all coming back to you now?” “No.” Jason glanced apprehensively at the other kids: maybe twenty guys, half that many girls. None of them looked like hardened criminals, but he wondered what they’d all done to get sentenced to a school for delinquents, and he wondered why he belonged with them. Leo rolled his eyes. “You’re really gonna play this out,…

This article is relatable back to Candide because of the skillful way it explains the circumstances under which man kills. The situations in which Candide finds himself killing reflect many of the situations one is compelled to commit murder. The first instance of Candide killing shows the primitive motive of killing is to reduce the sexual competition from another male. The compulsion also was derived in a manor of self defense, but does tie into the comfortable nature of killing exhibited later in the book. This trend relates to the research stated in the article well because it explains in a matter of circumstance a person can become more adept to such behavior.…

With text messaging becoming more and more popular among teenagers, teachers are starting to notice a decline in proper writing and a lack of critical thinking. In Michaela Cullington’s article, “Does Texting Affect Writing?” she discusses the concerns and benefits of textspeak, a word she uses to explain the text messaging language. While conducting her research, she found a source from the National Center for Education Statistics that claims that “… only 25% of high school seniors are ‘proficient’ writers” (362). Acknowledging the small percentage of students writing proper, most people believe that this has to do with the new way of speaking on IMs. With abbreviations and acronyms, it is challenging for students to write differently from…

In a seemingly ironic scenario of a writer writing an essay about his previous disdain for, then love of writing essays, Baker shares his previously antagonistic view of high school English classes and their required assignments. He describes his third-year English teacher, Mr. Fleagle, as “notorious among City students for dullness and inability to inspire” (para. 3). Baker injects a bit of a comical, but slightly annoyed tone when he describes Mr. Fleagle’s appearance and mannerisms, particularly the teacher’s constant use of the phrase “don’t you see” when trying to engage students (para. 6).…

She thanks the instructor and walks to the advisement center to register for classes. As she waits to be called she feels her stomach growling. She barely noticed her hunger. She started imaging those tender, juicy chicken strips from Whataburger, with the salty fried fries, and the soft moist Texas toast with a nice cold Sprite. “Karla,” she snaps out of her world of food as soon as she hears her name and walks to the advisor’s office. The small office faintly smelled like the cologne her ex-boyfriend uses. She sat on a rough chair while the advisor registered her. After waiting a while, the advisor hands her a paper with the classes she’ll take and what time they start at. She walks out of the office feeling tired yet accomplished. She walks to the parking area where her family was waiting for her. She informs them that she was officially a college student and that she was very hungry. While the family heads to a fast food restaurant to celebrate, the young woman fills her mind of college thoughts. She feels excited to start something new and proud of taking another step into her…

A radio commercial for a mail-order course on building your vocabulary states, “People judge you by the words you use.” Now, with The Words You Should Know to Sound Smart, people who hear you speak will see you as smart— perhaps even smarter than you really are. Some people who want to sound smart have cultivated a large vocabulary, which they unleash with great regularity. This book can serve as your “translator” when speaking with these pseudo-intellectuals. Many other people possess a large vocabulary but use it sparingly, preferring to speak and write in plain English. As more than one writing instructor has put it, “Your goal is to express, not to impress.” It’s possible that The Words You Should Know to Sound Smart may even put some money in your pocket. People who have a good vocabulary come o as con dent, intelligent, and motivated—qualities necessary for nancial success. The late motivational speaker Earl Nightingale liked to tell students about a twenty-year study of college graduates. The study concluded, “Without a single exception, those who had scored highest on the vocabulary test given in college were in the top income group, while those who had scored the lowest were in the bottom income group.” Scientist John O’Connor gave vocabulary…

It is early afternoon on July 12th and the advisors of the Class of 2012 Council orchestrated a brunch in honor of the council members’ hard work throughout the school year. As everyone begins to arrive, I sit outside the chosen restaurant awaiting the orange sign on the window to announce that it’s lunchtime. I dive into my mind thinking about what the day will turn out to be. I don’t have to hope for a good day; it will just be one of those days. I snap out of my reverie and jump off from my elevated chair to make my way to the entrance as the sign flips around.…

Teenagers’ lives are filled with writing. All teens write for school, and 93% of teens say they write for their own pleasure. Most notably, the vast majority of teens have eagerly embraced written communication with their peers as they share messages on their social network pages, in emails and instant messages online, and through fast-paced thumb choreography on their cell phones. Parents believe that their children write more as teens than they did at that age. This raises a major question: What, if anything, connects the formal writing teens do and the informal e-communication they exchange on digital screens? A considerable number of educators and children’s advocates worry that James Billington, the Librarian of Congress, was right when he recently suggested that young Americans’ electronic communication might be damaging “the basic unit of human thought – the sentence.”1 They are concerned that the quality of writing by young Americans is being degraded by their electronic communication, with its carefree spelling, lax punctuation and grammar, and its acronym shortcuts. Others wonder if this return to text-driven communication is instead inspiring new appreciation for writing among teens. While the debate about the relationship between e-communication and formal writing is on-going, few have systematically talked to teens to see what they have to say…
