What Happened At Tom's Funeral?
Have you ever run away from home, or thought about running away? Tom Sawyer and his buddies, Huck Finn and Joe Harper, ran away to a small nearby island. They lived on that island for several days, but one night Tom stole back home and learned of the grand funeral planned for the trio that the town believed to be dead. Some think Tom should have ventured back home to attend the funeral while others think he should have stayed and enjoyed the freedom of being "dead". Tom Sawyer should have attended his own funeral for three reasons. People would be joyful, Tom would be adored, and Tom would not be homesick. To begin Tom should have gone to his funeral because people would be joyful. Tom's dear Aunt Polly cried her heart out when Thomas was pronounced dead. To see him again would bring joy to her spirit and maybe a little annoyance too. Tom's sweetheart Becky would also be fantastically happy to see him alive and well. The two might even forget the argument they had that helped Tom make the decision to leave. Becky and Aunt Polly would not be alone in their jubilation. The whole town would join in joyfully celebrating …show more content…
They argue that Tom should have remained to punish Aunt Polly, Becky, and the school teacher who Tom despised for mistreating him. This, however, is invalid due to the fact that the adults who mistreated him only did so in Tom's eyes. In addition, people argue that the island was better than Sawyer's home. Tom could run around naked, swim, smoke, or do really anything he wanted when on the island. Although having that freedom is nice, this argument ignores the other factors that come into play when living on an island. These include Tom's lack of shelter, fish-only diet, and boredom. Neither argument-that Tom was mistreated or that the island was better than the village-would give Tom Sawyer a good enough reason to stay away from his

Through rejecting an education he is rejecting society and the religious, racist propaganda of the time. Huck paves his own path with help from Jim, a runaway slave and Huck’s most influential teacher. Jim encourages Huck to question many of the teachings he received from both Pap and Miss Watson. Multiple times, Huck chooses to go to hell rather than conform to cultural standards. This journey to maturity and independent thinking is contrasted by Tom Sawyer. Tom lives in the society Huck purposefully avoided and because of that is immature and less morally astute. Huck’s journey down the river with Jim shows that a true education can not be found in formal schooling, but in one’s own mind, one’s relationships with others and contact with the broad…

While Huck and Jim are on the river, they come across a sinking ship. Huck wants to go on the ship and steal from it, but Jim does not want to go near the ship because it is sinking. Huck says to Jim, “Do you reckon Tom Sawyer would ever go by this thing? Not for pie, he wouldn’t. He’d call it an adventure – that’s what he’d call it, and he’d land on that wreck if it was his last act” (Twain 67). Huck shows Tom is thrill-seeking by telling Jim this. Huck knows Tom would do anything for a good adventure. Tom would never pass up the opportunity to explore something and would always make the most of the escapade no matter how dangerous. Later in the novel, as Tom selfishly tries to help Huck save Jim, he comes up with many elaborate plans. Huck knows Tom’s plans are impractical, but Tom will not listen to him. When asked why he went through all the trouble to set Jim free when he already was, he replied with, “Well, that is a question, I must say; and just like women! Why I wanted the adventure of it; and I’d ‘a’ waded neck-deep in blood to” (Twain 289). Instead of telling everyone Jim is free like a practical person would, he leads Huck and Jim to believe the idea of breaking Jim out is extremely necessary. All he wants to do is go on adventures without a care in the world. Instead of thinking about others, he thinks about all the fun, adventurous things he could do as an alternative. Mark…

“(Tom)... was not the Model Boy of the village. He knew the model boy very well though - and loathed him” (Chapter 1, page 4). Although this quote doesn’t directly relate to getting into trouble, it does infer that he will get in trouble in the future related to Sid, the model boy. Later, “Aunt Polly raised him by the usual handle - his ear - and cracked his head soundly with her thimble” (Chapter 12, page 79). This example directly relates to Tom getting in trouble, for he is being punished in this quote. Additionally, after Tom lies to Aunt Polly, she says, “‘Tom, I’ve a notion to skin you alive!’” (Chapter 19, page 120). This quote shows Tom being verbally abused for what he has done, and rightfully so. Tom also does other things only children…
