What Does Power Mean To You Essay
“Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than the one derived from fear of punishment” (Gandhi). To me, this quote means power through generosity and kindness is longer lasting and more genuine than power gained by terror .
The first part of the quote, “Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love” (Gandhi) means that a person can come to power by two ways. One way is by making a person do something because he is afraid of what the consequences will be if he does not do the task. For example, in Animal Farm by George Orwell, Napoleon uses dogs to threaten the other animals into doing what he wants them to do (63). The second way to make someone behave is by being kind and showing love to them. On page 41 of Animal Farm, it shows that Snowball fought …show more content…
He said that if you make someone do something out of fear of punishment, he will do it, but sooner or later he will stop doing it because he will get fed up with it. Next, he said “If you have a pet and it loves you, it will mind you out of respect and appreciation. You can get it to do the same tricks by discipline, but it won’t be as genuine” (House). He is basically saying that if you are kind and respectful to someone, you will have more power than if he is terrified of the punishment for not doing something.
In conclusion, the quote “Power is of two kinds. One is obtained by the fear of punishment and the other by acts of love. Power based on love is a thousand times more effective and permanent than the one derived from fear of punishment” (Gandhi) means that if you are gracious and polite, you will gain more power and it will last longer than if you gain punishment by threatening someone into doing

    There have been many individuals throughout history that have left an indelible impact on their people and the world, but few could rival the difference that Mohandas Gandhi made. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in the British Common Wealth of India. He spent his youth witnessing the injustices that the English purveyed on the Indian people; something that eventually helped him to decide to become a barrister. Shortly after passing the bar, Gandhi was offered a case in South Africa that would require him to live in that country for about 1 year and he readily accepted. Once arriving in South Africa, he almost immediately experienced the prejudice that Indians living there had been enduring. The turning point for him came when he purchased a first class train ticket but was asked to move to the 3rd class coach, simply because he was Indian. When he quietly refused, he was physically thrown from the train. It was at that point that he decided to stay in South Africa to fight discrimination and what had been planned as a 1 year stay turned into 20 years. During that time he created, taught and practiced the concept of satyagraha, a non-violent way of protesting against injustices. (Rosenberg, n.d.) Gandhi believed that freedom could not be taken but must be given willingly and that this concept helped both the oppressor and the oppressed recognize the humanity in each other. The idea of satyagraha would be used by many great civil rights leaders as a way to advance their causes. Because of this, it remains Gahndhi’s greatest contribution to political change.…
